Also, ich wäre bereit.

luzia pimpinella travel | toskana - 3 ziele für einen livorno tagesausflug | tuscany - 3 things to do on a livorno day trip

we definitely wanted to see a little bit of the ocean, when we were on our easter vacation in TUSCANY lately! so one day we started off from MONTEBUONI for a day trip to LIVORNO. it took us 2-2½ hours to get to the tuscan coast. it was a longer drive than we originally thought, but it was worth it. it was all good for visiting the central market “MERCATO CENTRALE”, for having some burgers at the cool and completely un-italian SURFER JOE’S diner and a long walk along the livornos beautiful seafront BOARDWALK. join me on our trip today… let’s start with the farmers market!

shoppen in livornos markthalle MERCATO CENTRALE

shopping at livornos central market hall MERCATO CENTRALE

we love farmers markets and market halls! it’s always the best place for culinary experiences plus  you’re right at the pulse of life. well, there wasn’t that much pulsing anymore at the MERCATO CENTRALE that day, because we arrived late after our long drive to the coast. we found the central market in a stunning art nouveau market hall at the via del cardinale / corner via buontalenti. {opening hours are monday to saturday 7:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m}.
it was a pity that many of the marketeers were already putting away their goods to close their stands soon. but on the corridors there was still some food shopping going on.

we strolled through the aisles and once again regretted not having a cooler box in the car. so many delicious stuff caught our eye. at least mr. P. and the fräulein had some sweet treats on the go. everybody was laughing out loud when stephan accidentally ordered canneloni instead of cannoli.
haha! well, these little cream pastry rolls are really not my cuppa tea, but my lovelies liked them. a little later we couldn’t help purchasing some organic wine, fresh from the barrel. {author’s note: i really don’t talk trash when i say that my body just doesn’t tolerate wine. i was all wrecked after having only two half glasses. and the organic production didn’t help either! ;)} but however, we were getting hungry and had already figured out some place to eat in advance…

eating burgers at the SURFER JOE’S american diner

we found a restaurant tip mentioning SURFER JOE’S DINER in our lonely planet TUSCANY travel guide {LP is our all-time favorite, when it comes to travel guides}. the diner was located right in the basement of the livorno AQUARIUM. too bad that we didn’t have the time to visit it that day. well. hopefully next time! the surfer joe’s is a really nice american retro diner place to have burgers, pancakes and milk shakes. moreover there are DJ and live music jam sessions at night. we only experienced the food though, as we popped in at the afternoon. we were quite hungry and ordered three surfer joe’s specials. the burger was pretty okay. we were a little disapointed about the “secret surfin” sauce” vowed in the menue though. but yeah, admittedly we are kinda spoiled concerning burger sauces. whenever we’re having some beyond the homemade burgers at home, we’re picky with the sauces. the most restaurants hardly have really great burger sauces.
nevertheless we liked this place. especially for it’s cool and completely un-italian interior and it’s lovely location at the seafront. the view already invited us to have a walk after our meal.

taking a walk at the beautiful TERRAZZA MASCAGNI boardwalk

i instantly fell in love with the elegant TERRAZZA MASCAGNI that was built in the 1920s. it’s charming black and white chess patterned boardwalk with balustrades was stunning. along the way, teenagers were sitting on the wall reading, little children swooshed by on their little bikes and had ice cream, cool boys were cruising on their longboards, elderly women met for a chat and old men fished by the sea. we could see some surfers far away, riding the waves and we had a little tuscan sea breeze in our noses. a picture book place! and also a lovely ending of our day at livorno…
i hope you all will have an equal lovely whit weekend!

travel toskana | unser himmlisches plätzchen in montebuoni

luzia pimpinella | travel | unsere toskana-reise zu ostern | our tuscany easter trip
wasn’t it so clever to escape to springlike TUSCANY while a stormy low with the name “niklas” blew over germany? yes it was. we hoped for a little bit of sunshine for our easter holidays and what we got, was a whole lot of it! the sunny perspective really kept us motivated to drive the long 800 miles from home. but the more we got to the south the more it looked like spring. time to take a deep breath and be happy!

the CHIANTI region was our final destination. {we were  wondering if we wine philistines would also get a beer for dinner there? only once in a while of course.}. when we arrived pretty late in the evening we were glad to find the office, where we had to pick up our keys for our holiday home in MONTEBUONI, still open. it was located in RADDA in CHIANTI. everything went swimmingly, but it was late and we were very hungry. so we just stopped at the first ristorante we came by. well this really is the wonderful thing about italy… you actually don’t need any where-to-eat-tips. you simply walk into the next trattoria, osteria or
ristorante and you will most likely have a delicious meal! having this universal trust into italien cooking, we stopped by the ristorante LA BOTTA DI BACCO
just around the corner. we didn’t have a reservation – logically. but after a short wait they found a cozy place in the jam-packed restaurant. the food didn’t dissapoint as they served genuine homemade pasta and homemade bread there. without regard to the the fräulein’s tummy ache, caused by one and a half bags of eaten wine gum candy during the car trip, it was the perfect start into our tuscany holidays.

so when we arrived late at night at our vacation home after driving the typical tuscan “secret paths” {if you ever travelled the tuscany by car, you know what i’m talking about} we almost immediately fell into our beds. after some enthusiastic ahhhs and ohhhs of course! we postponed all explorations on the next morning. and that morning was like fresh from a picture book! sun beams came through the window shutters and bees were humming like crazy about the blooming rosemary hedges. yes, hedges! while north-german people have rinky-dink rosemary plants in little pots, the italian people have yard-long rosemary fences beside their paths. life isn’t always fair. well, that morning the fräulein was crowing over me as she had filled up half of her suitcase with summer t-shirts… against my motherly clothes-packing advice. mr. p. happily suggested to have our breakfast outside in the sun… und i just felt blessed.

our home for the easter holidays was the LA VIGNA at the MONTEBUONI village.
{if you click the link, you will see more pictures of the pretty interior of the house. i wasn’t able to shoot proper indoor photos as i was missing a wide angle lens badly. so sorry.}. there was an awesome starter-package of food and usefull stuff {can be booked seperately on TO-TOSKANA} waiting in our well-equipped kitchen when we arrived. we brought some salame and
cheese from home though. yes!!! it is like “”carrying coals to newcastle” when you travel to italy! i know. but anyway… we cann’t do without savory breakfast and we actually didn’t want to search for some place to shop groceries on our very first day. particularly as it was a sunday. soon we would find out that there was a cute little store at the next village LECCHI in CHIANTI. a really lovely shop where you an buy almost everything and were the local people have their esspresso in the morning at a tiny bar. but first we enjoyed the warm sunshine at our private breakfast table in the garden. we were surrounded by olive trees, humming bees on rosemary bushes and lavender hedgerows. pure balm for our souls after a long and grey north-german icky weather.

after our sunny breakfast {we even had to use suncreen!} we went for a walk to explore “our” little  MONTEBUONI. the village is located on a hill with a breathtaking view over chinati vineyards, olive groves and the green tuscan landscape. some of the picturesque stone cottages are holiday homes for tourists. others are privately owned by locals who spend leisure time there. there are no cars allowed. they have to stay outside of the village. so the athmosphere is absolutely and perfectly relaxed!

 luzia pimpinella | travel | montebuoni - unser ferienhaus in der toskana | our tuscany vacation home

we found lovely picnic spots at the montebuoni estate and a tennis court for all free time boris’ and steffis. moreover there was a beautiful pool and deck chairs for all the vacationers to use. at that time, end of march, the water was pretty chilly though. it wouldn’t keep a hard-boildes north sea swimmer from plunging in… but us! well… we chilly bones preferred the private {and heated!} jacuzzi that belonged to our LA VIGNA house. reserved for us only. ha!

the fräulein found herself in teenager heaven, as you can see. what an amazing easter holiday kind of luxury! but even if this place on earth in midst of the chianti was so heavenly… you know us… we already had itchy feet! so while the miss took her bubbling bath, the mr. and me made plans what to see. because the lovely MONTEBUONI village was also a perfect starting point to explore some beautiful tuscan cities and the amazing landscape by doing day trips. from there we headed off to SIENA, FLORENCE, LIVORNO, SAN GIMIGNANO and VOLTERRA… so stay tuned for more stories from the tuscany… arrivederci!!!

well yes, our travel souvenirs from the TUSCANY looked quite heavy on calories indeed {and actually they were}. but that’s the way it is you eat, when traveling ITALY. you just gotta have some real traditional, italian food and we love it! now that we’re back at home, we still can indulge ourselves with tuscan tastiness for a while. the only thing actually missing, is some good bread to accompany it. so yesterday i baked a devine, homemade ROSMARY GARLIC FOCACCIA following a recipe by jamie oliver. it was the perfect match for our tuscan delicaciescoppa, salame toscano, pecorino-cheese and olives.
and although we’re passionate beer drinkers, we had some chianti we brought along with it. a dinner like a vacation! sigh…

i’d like to leave a special salute to charlotte aka @frauschlotti from the NIMMERSATT blog here in this place! because even if we didn’t manage to “work off” all the awesome recommendations for VOLTERRA
she left in a lovely comment on my instagram, she was the reason why i looked for a special tuscan goodie. so i got an outrageous expensive {but totally worth it} HONEY WITH TRUFFLES to take home. what a revelation!!! even the little fräulein loves it on cheese! so thank you very much for putting this on my shopping list!

rezept für ROSMARIN KNOBLAUCH FOCACCIA à la jamie oliver {20 portionen}

1 kg mehl type 550 & etwas mehl
zum bestäuben
625 ml lauwarmes wasser
2 päckchen trockenhefe
2 EL zucker
meersalz & frisch gemahlener
pfeffer
natives olivenöl
1 knolle knoblauch
ein paar frische rosmarin zweige
my homemade FOCACCIA bread was amazing fluffy and tasty… and it was huge! i
better should have had a closer look at the recipe as it serves 20
people! i could have fed the whole neighborhood with this loaf. next time
i’ll halve the ingredients for this it. so if you want to try it out,
i’d like to send all you english-speaking guys over to the jamie oliver recipe. you can find the ROSEMARY & GARLIC FOCACCIA here at jamie’s homecooking skills. check it out and then… buon appetito!

actually i really didn’t manage to escape DAILY ROUTINE in february, because i was so busy DECLUTTERING the house. i hardly made it outside except for a lovely saturday evening i spent with adorable blogger friends and their hubbies to celebrate jeanny’s aka mrs. ZUCKER ZIMT & LIEBE‘s birthday. so i mostly escaped into daydreaming about a gateaway or in browsing through old vacation photographs to feed my constant wanderlust. in my thoughts i just travelled back to FLORENCE and i’m so happy that we really will be there again in a few weeks! we’ll be making a little easter trip to the TUSCANY soon. but until then i’d like to take you on a weekend walk through this beautiful italian city…

INTERVIEW

luzia pimpinella | sommerstippvisiten 2014 | inteview morgenmuffelin - portrait mela

 luzia pimpinella | sommerstippvisiten 2014 | inteview morgenmuffelin - innsbruck
luzia pimpinella | sommerstippvisiten 2014 | inteview morgenmuffelin - obernberger see

frau PIMPI fragt:
blogger-relations medaille. was sollten PR-ler und blogger/innen

luzia pimpinella | sommerstippvisiten 2014 | inteview morgenmuffelin - siena
luzia pimpinella | sommerstippvisiten 2014 | inteview morgenmuffelin - cinque terre

EAT & DRINK

food love | italienische antipasti

well, we didn’t only celebrate new year’s eve, we even had an awesome party with some friends and yummy  italian antipasti the day before. yes, you could say we’re addicted to deliciousness and amusement. the recipes for these antipasti are probably the oldest in my cooking notebook and i made them for years over and over again, because they are so good. what a shame that i didn’t share them here on the blog yet… after all, your next party will surely come, right!?

the recipes serves 6. but actually it depends on how many different antipasti you’re going to serve, if you want to have them as a starter or the main dish and if there are other foods to accompany them.
please don’t stint on olive oil for these… take the best with the most flavor you can find! the antipasti are perfect to prepare on the prvious day of a party. enjoy trying them yourself!

zucchini in roher tomaten-knoblauchsauce [zucchini salsa cruda di pomodoro]

* 1,5 kg zucchini, nicht zu groß
* 3/8 l tomatensaft
* 1/8 l + etwas olivenöl
* 3 knoblauchzehen
* 1 töpfchen basilikum
* salz & frisch gemahlenen pfeffer

zucchini

zucchini in raw tomato-garlic-sauce

* 1,5 kg zucchini, not too large
* 3/8 l tomato juice
* 1/8 l + some olive oil
* 3 large garlic cloves
* 1 bunch of basil
* salt & freshly ground pepper

wash & clean the zucchini and cut
lengthwise into 0.2 inch slices. spread sliced on kitchen kleenex and
sprinkle with salt to dewater. wait for 15 minutes, dab off the water
droplets and repeat with the other side of the slices. in the meantime
mix the tomato juice with olive oil and finely chopped garlic cloves.
season with a god pinch of salt and pepper.
heat
up some olive oil in a large frying pan and roast the zuccini slices
on both sides until slightly brown. layer the zucchini slices, the
tomato sauce and some fresh plucked basil leaves in a bowl. let it rest in
the fridge over night.

mariniere rote paprika [peperoni rossi marinati]

* 6 rote paprikaschoten
* 1/4 l olivenöl
* 3 große knoblauchzehen
* salz

marinated bell peppers

* 6 red bell peppers
* 1/4 l olive oil
* 3 large garlic cloves
* salt

wash & clean bell pepper. cut in quarters. pre-heat the baking oven at 250°C. spred the bell peppers on a baking tray covered with baking paper, peel side up! bake for about 15 – 20 minutes until the pepper skin blisters [you can turn on the grill function if you like] it’s okay that the skin turns a little back, as you can see here on my INSTAGRAM picture. get out of the oven and let cool down when the skin is completely blistered.
meanwhile peel the garlic gloves and chop into thin slices. remove the skin from the bell peppers carefully and cut the pulp into smaller stripes. layer with olive oil, some salt and garlic slices in a bowl. let rest at a cool place over night.

marinierte champignons [funghi marinati]

* 500 g champignons
* 1/4 l + etwas olivenöl
* 1/8 l wasser
* saft von 2 zitronen
* 1 lorbeerblatt
* 6 schwarze pfefferkörner
* 1/2 TL salz
* ein bund frischen thymian oder auch getrockneten
* 2 große knoblauchzehen

marinated champingons

* 500 g champignons
* 1/4 l + some olive oil
* 1/8 l water
* juice of 2 lemons
* 1 bay leaf
* 6 black pepper pfeffercorns
* 1/2 tsp. salt
* a bunch of fresh thyme or dried thyme
* 2 large garlic cloves

clean the mushrooms. heat up a little olive oil in a frying pan and roast them until they are slightly brown. salt and pepper and set aside.  mix the 1/4 l olive oil, water, lemon juice, bay leaf, peppercorns, finely chopped garlic and plucked thyme leaves in a pan and bring to boil. let the mixture simmer at low heat for about 15 minutes. if you don’t like the solid ingredients in the marinade, strain it. i don’t think it’s really neccessary. mix the mushrooms with the marinade and let rest in the fridge over night. drain the marinade before serving.

marinierte möhren [carote all’agrodolce]

* 750 g möhren
* 1/4 l trockener weißwein
* 75 ml weißweinessig
* 4 EL honig
* salz
* 50g pinienkerne
* 2 EL olivenöl

marinated carrots

* 750 g carrots
* 1/4 l dry white wine
* 75 ml white wine vinegar
* 4 tbsp. honey
* salt
* 50 g pine seeds
* 2 tbsp. olive oil

peel carrots, cut into 0.4. inch thick and 2 inch long pieces and cook in salt water for 10 minutes. let drain.  mix wine, white wine vinegar, honey and salt in a pan and boil up. pour over the carrots and let rest in the fridge over night. before serving let the carrots drain from the marinade and roast pine seeds gently in a pan. serve carrots with sprinkeled olive oil and pine seeds.

it’s a pity that this year’s september presents itself with a quite poor performance so far, instead of being beautiful and golden. i must admit, that i feel quite dull lately because of all the grey outside. maybe you feel the same!? so i thought we could have a long photographic walk today in the tuscany, in beautiful SAN GIMIGNANO to be exact.

we spent one week of last year’s summer holidays together with our best friends in TUSCANY. one day we headed for a trip to san gimignano. it is a beautiful small town with stunning medivial architecture and charming cobblestone alleys. at each corner along the way you stumble upon culinary delicacies. because of it’s high defence towers it is called the “medivial manhattan”. once there were 72 of it, nowadays there are only 14 left, but they are very impressing. the small town is so special, that it became an unesco world heritage sight in 1990. i’m still a little sad, that i didn’t get a shot of the “skyline” that day.

once in a while i call my best friend sonja “my little butcher soul”, because she has a weakness for medivial bloody pestilence and witch hunting novels. moreover she’s not to be freaked out very easily when it comes to gross stories. so of course she wanted to see the torture museum there, the MUSEO della TORTURA. she went with her hubby, me and all others quit.

inevitably it was the ice cream palor of SERGIO DONDOLI who is said to create the best ice cream in the world. we were lucky not to stand and wait in line all across the PIAZZA DELLA CISTERNA that day. i can’t remember what flavors the others had, but i went for raspberry sorbet with rosemary and it really was amazing!

after a short break with some ice cream, squeezebox music, men watching and instagramming we went on exploring the culinary possibilities.

no need to convince the guys to have a wine and bore salami tasting. of course they loved to and of course we left the deli with some wine, salami and cheese in a big bag. it’s was too tempting. [i don’t want to see sings with german writing on it, when i travel abroad by the way. i totally dislike that!]

san gimignano is located on top of a hill and one has a great view on tuscany’s landscapes. we stopped to take some mandatory family travel snapshots. erik discovered another wine testing and the girls were allowed to take a sniff but not a sip. obviously the sniff was enough for them. ;)

i was really wondering how it might feel to live in a town with all the masses of people visiting. it is as popular siena, lucca, pisa and florence. of course we were some of the visitors ourselves that day. but no need to tell that san gimignano would be even more beautiful without the crowds.

how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome | if there’s one thing we do have a talent for while travelling, then it’s to arrive at a famous landmark just at blistering noonday heat. that is really so very pimpinell-ish. so it’s clear it was all the same when we went to see the COLOSSEUM in ROME last summer.
luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | wie wir die warteschlange am colosseum in rom übersprangen | how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome

[ah yes… i you’re wondering now if i not only switched to a new and more summerly blog header but also messed around with the time-space continuum… no, i didn’t. of course it’s not tuesday today! but i planned this posting for tuesday until my technical equipment decided to take some days off quite spontaneously. but who cares… rome is always a good idea! ;) ]

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | wie wir die warteschlange am colosseum in rom übersprangen | how we jumped the waiting line at the colosseum in rome

so, back to the colosseum where it felt like 45° C in the shadows when we arrived. at least we knew,  looking at the hundreds of meters of waiting line, that we weren’t the only ones with a suboptimal timing for sightseeing… and we were quite pleased about the booths around the place selling not only kitschy souvenirs but also pretty pink UMBRELLAS. 3 euros could have been invested worse.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | fotos vom colosseum in rom | photography from the colosseum in rome

we didn’t get ourselves some fancy gladiator sandals for visiting the colosseum. we spent our money on some more clever thing. maybe you know already that we’re true fans of the lonely planet travel guides because of the small but smart tipps they provide. and also this time the ROME city guide didn’t fail. it told us not to purchase our tickets at the colosseum itself, but just around the corner at the entrance at the PALATINO [Via di San Gregorio 30]. the tickets are not only valid for the palatino, but also for the FORUM ROMANUM and the COLOSSEUM. ha! good thing, because there is are no long lines at that place.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | familien-reise-schnappschuss im colosseum in rom | family travel snapshot at the colosseum in rome

and then we just skipped the waiting with the masses part and couldn’t stop grinning. we jumped right into the lion’s den.

well, if you plan in advance and you know exactely when you want to visit one tourist attraction, you often have the possibility to book your tickets online. another elegant way to jump the queue… nothing better that that, right? for more information also check THIS.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | die arena des colosseum in rom | the arena of the colosseum in rome

this place felt so deeply impressing and firghtening at the same time. i imagined the jeering crowds in the rows while life or death fights were taking place down in the arena just for amusement. like in this the picture the gorund was covered with wood ans sand back then. not only because they had lifting ramps to bring fighters and animals from the cellar vaults up into the battle. but also to let all the blood drain somewhere. really a dreadful piece of human history.
let us skip to something more gleeful again please…

maybe you remember my travel to winterly MERANO last december. i’d love to take you on a trip to south tyrol again today, showing you the lovely place i stayed at… it was the beautiful PENSION OTTMANNGUT.
[luzia pimpinella BLOG] Reise nach Meran in Südtirol: die Pension Ottmanngut, eine historische Perle | Travel to Merano in South Tyrol: the B&B Pension Ottmanngut, a historic gem

the ottmanngut is beautifully located in between of mountains and vineyards. it’s a living piece of merano’s history, mentioned in books for the first time in 1290 as a farm estate. at mid-19th-century some ancestor of the present-day owners purchased the estate as a summer resort. since vineyards were part of the property it didn’t take long for a little vine tavern to be opened. later on some guest rooms for travellers followed. after some years of leasing out FAMILY KIRCHLCHNER assumed ownership again in the 70s and the bed and breakfast house has been run by them since then.

[luzia pimpinella BLOG] Reise nach Meran in Südtirol: die Pension Ottmanngut, eine historische Perle | Travel to Merano in South Tyrol: the B&B Pension Ottmanngut, a historic gem

you can feel the heart and soul that has been put into this family business. grandmother MARTH KIRCHLECHNER was the head of this business for many years. she’s still living in one apartement in the house and she heartily greets every guest at breakfast time in italian or german language. but now the younger generation took over… son GEORG and grandsons MARTIN and CLEMENS spent 2 years in renovating and modernizing the estate. they did so treading warily and carefully keeping up the traditional fabric of the building. the result was a respectful symbiose of contemporary design and historic spirit.

[luzia pimpinella BLOG] Reise nach Meran in Südtirol: die Pension Ottmanngut, eine historische Perle | Travel to Merano in South Tyrol: the B&B Pension Ottmanngut, a historic gem

the interior unifies modern comfort and traditional furnishing with much passion for detail. the family is very proud of the many pieces of furniture which already belonged to the “old ottmanngut”, especially of the family property dated back to the BIEDERMEIER era. they also take much pride in the original wooden floor that was found beneath a linoleum coverage and was restored carefully.

missing pieces of furniture and accessoires where gathered together with love on antique markets like in PIAZZOLA sul BRENTA. so every one of the nine ROOMS has it’s own, special charme. i stayed at the smallest but very charming room called ROTES SALETTL which had a breathtaking mountain view from the balcony.

[by the way… for all lovers of fleamarkets and italy travellers the biggest north italian ANTIQUE MARKET in AREZZO in the tuscany is also a top tip. it takes place every first sunday of the month at the piazza grande and around in the smaller alleys from 7:30 a.m. till 1:00 p.m.]

[luzia pimpinella BLOG] Reise nach Meran in Südtirol: die Pension Ottmanngut, eine historische Perle | Travel to Merano in South Tyrol: the B&B Pension Ottmanngut, a historic gem

culinary art is highly appreciated at the ottmangut. ingredients for breakfast and snacks are handpicked and from local farms and sources and organic grown and produced whenever possible. these fine details and the cordiality of the hosts make your stay a memorable one. THANK YOU very much, family kirchlechner, i’ll surely be back some day!
a few days ago i found myself buying some VINSCHGAUER, which is a typical south tyrolian bread roll, at our local [!] bakery by the way. before my trip i didn’t even know where to find VINSCHGAU on the map. it’s funny how travel memories stick with you. i felt like carrying a piece of south tyrol home with me, even if it wasn’t no original one.
then the other day i happened to come across a list of SOUTH TYROLIAN RECIPES [in german language only, sorry]. i think, i’ll have to make some SCHLUTZKRAPFEN soon…. or better travel back to south tyrol to enjoy some there…

;) THANK YOU to the marketinggesellschaft MERAN for inviting me on this trip! it was all fun! i affirm to all my dear READERS that my enthusiasm about things and my point of view will always be my very own. ;)
PHOTOGRAPHY TRAVEL

bike love #1

i tell you what happens if you tell mrs. p. to browse her archive looking for bike shots for this week’s photo project theme… she will spend hours [time that she actually doesn’t really have] rummaging in old photographs. she will reminisce about good times digging even deeper in memories. then the little fräulein will join and they will love to look at old memories together. they’ll forget about time… oops, that late already? the fräulein will go to bed far too late, mrs. p. will probably do the same. that will get back on us tomorrow morning, but anyway… we loved it!

well, i found countless bikeshots from wherever! umm… i can’t squeeze them into just one posting. as i told you, i’ve got a bicycle tic. so this is my catch of last summer only… the “biciclette d’italia”. i collected them traveling through italy. in florence, in lucca, in volterra, in rome, in sardinia…

big bike love here. obviously. although i don’t like riding a bike that much. i’m a weird person. and i’m tired… so good night for now…

TRAVEL

ho ho ho…. palmtrees and snow! a weekend trip to MERANO! together with a bunch of bloggers instead of the family… that sounded like an interesting travel experience i couldn’t miss. so i left for that trip in midst of pre-christmas business leaving my family at home [poor lovelies] and traveling to ITALY for a second time this year. arriving at merano, my first thought was… hey, they have palm trees in their gardens… wow! these palmtrees were supposed to carry whithe snow the next day. never saw that before! but let’s start my story with the first evening…

did you ever dine in a huge christmas bauble? nope? me, i didn’t either before. but it’s a cozy and culinary experience for sure. these mini restaurants, the THERMEN KUGLN, on the christmas market in front of the merano therme [a thermal bath] are just amazing. they offer space for 8 – 10 people and serve delicious tyrolian specialities. the giant ornaments were created by a local design studio and built with all local materials.
i decided for the vension medallions with burgundy sauce, small buckwheat gnocchi and sauteed red cabbage. my italian blogger colleagues courageously went for the “schlachteplatte”  for two [which means “butcher’s plate” and it is blood sausage, liver sausage, assorted smoked meats and big breadcrumb dumplings on sauerkraut]. that was my chance to try blood sausage, i was quite curious about this. well, it’s no dish for everyday but definitely quite yummy!!! believe it or not.

next moring we got our assignment for the day and started off to a geocaching tour in and around MERANO! have you ever been on a GPS scavanger hunt? i must say, that our rules were quite different from the usual as our caches were places and people that we had to find! we were also provided with a map and informations for geocaching dummies like me. all passionate geo cachers may forgive me! on our way to the first cache we were strolling the lovely historic center of merano…

tyrolian charme, cobblestone pavement, adorable small boutiques and one gourmet food and wine store after another. bummer that we didn’t have the time to go shopping here! i imagined summer here, when all the cafés and restaurants probable move their furniture outside to sit there in the sun enjoying something to drink and to eat. i think it’s really wonderful in summer here.

our first cache stop was the amazing private home of mrs. vanni! we ringed the doorbell at a quite inconspicucous house to find ourselved in midst of a museum a few moments later. mrs. vanni is a 72 years old lady and she has been collecting things for all her life…  antique umbrellas, traditional bone china, porcellain pipes, dresses, dolls and other valuables.

we had homemade cookies and listened to stories from the past and from now. amongst other things we heard that omi [ = granny] vanni even had a role in a movie with donald sutherland! we were quite impressed by the energy and esprit of this lady. it wasn’t easy to leave for the next cache. by the way…. her family set up an own webpage for amazing OMI VANNI… and she also has a facebook fan page! isn’t that cool?

before we said goodbye mrs. vanni insisted that we had to try the first schnapps of that day before 11 a.m… walnut liqueur. homemade. cincin!

to find the next stop, we had to go by bus to VILLAGE TIROLO and it’s beautiful TYROL CASTLE. usually there are horse carriages that can bring you up to the castle. but that day we had the quite rare [due to the mediterranean climate] case of snowfall and so the horses carriages stayed in their barn. we had a pretty walk up to the castle meeting a black sheep [and everybody go… cuuuuuute!] and having a great view.

we experienced the TYROLIAN CASTLE ADVENT with it’s typical delicacies and an artisan market with local products and artwork. we met JULIA ELLEMUNTER modelling a ceramic plate with a family crest. unfortunately my pictures of that all turned out to be quite blurry. what a bummer! we took the chance to get some lunch [we really needed some basis for homemade walnut liqueurs and more alcoholic drinks to come]. the boys chose “bauerntost”  [= farmer’s toast]. it’s a VINSCHGERL with bacon/ham and scallopped with cheese in an oven.  these buns come with loads of caraway which unfortunatly isn’t my favorite spice. another bummer. but the boys were all enthusiastic about it!

cache four and five were located on the christkindl market back in merano again. i really liked the slightly skew-whiff huts that are all built from local materials. producing and selling local is a big thing in merano! everything you can buy at the christmas market huts [wether artwork or food] was manufactured and produced in the merano reagion. so no wonder i had the best GLÜHWEIN [= spiced mulled wine] of my life, which was made from high quality red wine of south tyrol and much love!

we strolled over the christkindl market, marveled at delicate wood carving artwork and smelled the scent of christmas. so sad that the snow turned into rain at that time…

after the hearty stop over at the christmas market we had to jump on to the bus again to get to the next cache…  the CASTLE in SCHENNA. the rain had stopped and the temperatures had risen meanwhile so that fog was coming up from the valley. we watched the castle disappear completely  in 2 minutes, what an amazing sight to see!

it was quite a walk from the bus stop to get to the castle, but it was such an idyllic way though we walked through all that fog. it would habe been even more lovely witout having boots at my feet that felt like ball and chain. they were all soaked up with melting snow… oh my…

there was another christmas market going on at castle schenna that weekend. it was a rustic athmosphere in the vaults of the castle where many artisans were offering their works. we warmed up having a hot elderberry wine with a lacing of rum before we headed back to merano.

well, after this lovely but exhausting day i thought about some recreation at the THERME , but it was late by then and i was so very tired that i was afraid to drown in the bath. the day in the fresh and winterly mountain air really killed me! .

;) a presto!
so that probably means i have to come back one day… for having a bath at the therme, for mountain walks or mountain bike tours for the hubby, maybe for warm summer nights in the alleys of historic meran or for some wine tasting in the region together with our wine crazy friends? i like you, meran… thank you for introducing yourself to me in this special way! just one thing… could you please work on your transport connection? that would be so nice… ;) a presto!

P.S. my merano accomodation was beyond beautiful by the way. i loved it so much that i’ll be writing a seperate posting for it…. so stay tuned.

my [insta]weekend

my weekend in INSTRAGRAM…. i was invited to a weekend trip with geo caching to MERANO in south tyrol. off to see the mountains! what a pleasure für a flat country girl like me.

i stayed at an exquisite place… more about that later…

i had dinner in a huge christmas bauble and i courageously tried  blood sausage. and yes… i really liked it!

i explored meran together with my blogger colleagues stefan [kaffeeersatz] und jeremy [reisewerk]. i had my first homemade walnut liqueur before 11 am at the amazing home of an even more amazing old lady…  and i had the very best hot spiced wine a few hours later on the christkindl market.

i saw tyrolian castles vanishing in the fog within a minute, visited artisan markets in old castle vaults, all in totally wet winter boots. i enjoyed the culirnary art, the people and landscape a lot.

i loved to stay longer at this lovely place, yet i had to leave yesterday. but i’m coming back for sure.

traveling home i was freaked out facing the fact that the italian trains started a strike [and also facing the raised eyebow of the train conductor: “what? where do you want to go? to innsbruck? good luck, lady!”] … i calmed my nerves down with nibbling the best dries apples i ever had… and luckily arrived at the airport innsbruck in time.

… i endured some 80s christmas musik on board the plane and landed happily at home to hug my lovelies. they even set up the christmas tree while i was away. now it’s really time to get some rest and be together with the ones i love.
if you want to see more pictures and read some strories about my meran exploration this weekend, stay tuned… for now i wish you all a good start into the new week!

P.S. have you been to meran yet? what did you love the most about it? i’m really interested in your thoughts….

TRAVEL

the destination i loved the most during our ITALY trip this summer wasn’t the tuscany or sardinia… it was ROME! yes. i loved it so much despite the blistering heat. actually i love blistering heat. well, and i must admit i also loved the fact that the romans mostly don’t care about SIESTA times… life is humming there. all day long!

and just because it’s MARKET DAY today, let’s take a walk around the CAMPO DEI FIORI. there’s an everyday (exept sunday) farmers market in the morning on the piazza. it’s one of the most famous markets in rome and so no wonder there is an awesome hustle and bustle around this place. if you need a little rest, you just sit down in one of the many TRATTORIAS and have yourself a cappuccino. just relax and watch the market life…

we really fell in love with rome. we’ll be back fur sure!

P.S. i didn’t manage yet to browse through our BEAUTY IS WHERE YOU FIND IT collage today… but it seems like we created a journey to markets all over the world. that is totally awesome! thank you for joining this photo project every week! i really appreciate every entry although i can’t find the time to leave comment everywhere. you rock this thing!

i feel so groggy right now, folks… i promise to come up with the OCTOBER challenges tommorrow. good night for now. ;)
