nun, ich sagte ja letzte woche… irgendwie lassen sich meine liebsten reisefotos aus MÉRIDA schwerlich in ein posting pressen und doch habe ich es versucht. es ist ein bisschen länger geworden…
das schöne an mérida ist, dass es eine touristenstadt ist, in der man die touristen nicht wirklich bemerkt.
so kam es uns zumindest vor. dieser ort ist alles andere als ein
geheimtipp für yucatán-reisende, aber er fühlt sich trotzdem fast so an.
irgendwie verläuft sich alles und oft genug hat man das gefühl, als wäre man der einzige fremde dort… das fand ich wunderbar.

well, i told you last week… it’s almost impossible for me to put all my favorite travel shots from MÉRIDA into just one posting. but i tried anyway. so the following turned out to be a bit longer…
the quite lovely thing about mérida is, that this city is a tourist town, but on the whole it doesn’t seem too touristic. it’s really no secret gem for yucatán travellers anymore but it gives you the feeling that it still is one. there are so many times you feel like the only stanger at this place… it was awesome.
das lebhafte herz der stadt ist, wie überall in mexiko, der zócalo, der zentrale platz… in diesem fall der PLAZA GRANDE. der hübsche park mit bäumen und {auch} schattigen bänken ist umgeben von wunderschöner, historischer architektur. zum beispiel der CATEDRAL DE SAN ILDEFONSO, für deren bau, quasi als bindeglied zwischen spanischer und der maya kultur, auch steine eines alten maya-tempels verbaut wurden. das wunderhübsche grüne kolonialgebäude im letzten foto hier ist der PALACIO DE GOBIERNO. es lohnt sich ein kleiner rundgang, um die wandmalereien des künstlers FERNANDO CASTRO PACHECO zu bewundern. im erdgeschoss des gebäudes befindet sich übrigens die touristen information wo man auch kostenlose, geführte touren durch das hostorische zentrum buchen kann, wenn man mag.
like in every mexican city or village, the zócalo, the central square is the lively heart of town. in this case it’s the PLAZA GRANDE. the pretty park with trees and {also} shady benches is surrounded by beautiful historical architecture. for example the CATEDRAL DE SAN ILDEFONSO, which is a spiritual union of spanish and mayan history as people used stones from an ancient maya temple to construct it. the lovely green colonial building in the last picture is the PALACIO DE GOBIERNO. you can walk inside to have a look at the amazing murals painted by local artist FERNANDO CASTRO PACHECO. you can also find the tourist office at the ground floor of this building by the way. there are free guided tours around the historical places available.
mérida lässt sich wunderbar zu fuß erkunden. an manchen ecken muss man auf den schmalen bürgersteigen ein wenig wegen der vorbeifahrenden autos aufpassen. ich liebe es, einfach durch die gegend zu laufen und das ganz normale leben zu beobachten.
it’s nice and easy to explore mérida by foot. sometimes you have to be careful though because the sidewalks can be very narrow and the traffic’s passing by real close. i love to just walk around and watch real life going on.
pferdekutschen {natürlich ein eindeutiger hinweis, dass wir dann doch nicht die einizigen touristen dort waren} sind im zentrum allgegenwärtig. ich finde ja immer, man muss sich auf reisen auch mal ganz zielstrebig zum touri-honk machen. das macht spaß und klein eselchen wollte doch auch so gerne…
horse drawn carriages can bee seen all aound the place {an explicit sign that we were not the only tourists in the city}. i love to make a tourist-fool out of myself once in a while. it’s so much fun and after all little donkey wanted that ride so baaadly…
ich denke, ich erwähnte bereits {mehr als einmal}, wie sehr ich märkte mag. menschen beobachten, typisches essen probieren, obst für ein picknick einkaufen… ein markt ist immer ein irgendwie inspirierender ort. in mérida ist es der MERCADO MUNICIPAL LUCAS DE GÁLVEZ {der städtische markt}, wo das ganz normale leben stattfindet. ich habe einen wirklich netten artikel HIER darüber gefunden, falls es euch interessiert.
i think i mentioned {quite several times} that i really love to visit local markets wherever we go. you can watch people, try local food, buy some vegetables and stuff to have a picnic… a market is always an inspiring place to be. in mérida it’s the MERCADO MUNICIPAL LUCAS DE GÁLVEZ {the municipal market} where life happens. i found a nice artikle about the market HERE by the way, if you’re interested.
an jedem samstagabend ab 20:00 uhr wird die innenstadt, der plaza grande und die straßen drumherum, zur autofreien zone. jedes wochenende wird hier richtiggehend zelebriert… bunt, fröhlich, köstlich und mit viel musik und tanz! wir hatten unsere paar tage in der stadt extra so getaktet, das wir das wöchentliche straßen fest “el corazón de mérida” mit erleben konnten. die extra planung hat sich gelohnt für diesen wunderbaren trubel…
every saturday evening at 8 p.m. the streets around the plaza grande will be closed up for traffic. every weekend the people of mérida celebrate the street festival “el corazón de mérida” … colorful, happy, delicious and with music and public dance. we planned our stay at the city over a weekend to be able to attend this event and it’s lovely hustle and bustle… it was totally worth it.
vor dem PALACIO MUNICIPAL {dem rathaus} wiegten sich hunderte von paaren zu MARIACHI-klängen über den platz. die stimmung war einmalig. herr P. und ich tanzen auch ein paar schritte {unglücklicherweise ohne fotografischen beweis}, aber gaben es schnell wieder auf. im vergleich mit den geschmeidigen bewegungen der mexikaner, sahen wir dann doch wie linksfüßige bewegungslegastheniker aus.
in front of the PALACIO MUNICIPAL {the city hall} hundreds of couples swayed all over the place to the sound of a MARIACHI band. it was such a lovely atmoshpere. mr. P. and i tried a little dance ourselves {unfortunately without any photo proof} but stopped, as we felt like left-footed dorks comparing to the lithe moves of the mexicans.
auch auf den kleineren plätzen ringsherum ist samstagabends so richtig was los. folklore-tänze {traditionelle oder auch moderne} und gesang der örtlichen vereine auf der bühne, stände mit tacos, enchiladas & co, buden mit marquesitas, churros {HIER habe ich übrigens ein nicht nur optisch leckeres rezept dafür gefunden} und eis… und das schönste daran, dies alles ist keinesfalls eine veranstalungen für die touristen, wie man meinen mag. touristen waren {außer uns dreien} an dem abend von dem die fotos stammen eigentlich kaum welche zu sehen. nein, die leute feierten einfach… das wochenende und sich selbst.
even on the smaller squares around the center life’s bursting on saturday nights. folklore dancing {tradional as well as modern} and singing performances of local clubs are on stage. there are booth with tacos, enchiladas & such, stands selling marquesitas and churros {found a nice recipe HERE by the way} and ice cream… and the most lovely thing about it is, that these cultural events are organizied by locals and for locals. we hardly saw any tourist at this place on that evening we spent there… it was awesome.
ein traditionelles HUIPIL habe ich mir nicht mitgebracht. das bedauere ich heute eigentlich ein bisschen. aber eine menge wunderbarer reise-erinnerungen und tausende bilder hatten wir wieder einmal im gepäck, wie ihr sehen konntet… für mich sowieso das schönste mitbringsel, das es gibt.
i didn’t bring a traditional HUIPIL from this trip. i still think it’s a bummer i didn’t. but we brought lots of sweet travel memories and tons of photographs, as you can see… for me these are the most precious souvenirs anyway.
