neighborhoods

wie schön dann, wenn man in einer city gelandet ist, in der es auch ein CHINATOWN gibt. in toronto gibts auch eins… nicht so pittoresk wie in L.A. oder in SAN FRANCISCO, aber mit charmant-schrullig kann es sehrwohl dienen. 

but even nicer then, when there are neighborhoods like a CHINATOWN to explore. toronto’s chinatown might not be that picturesque like the one in L.A. or in SAN FRANCISCO, but it can definitely offer some charming quirky moments.

strahlend lächelnde asiatische colgate-familien auf zahnpasta-packungen, kitsch und püngel, obst & gemüse, gewürze, [geruchsintensiver] getrockneter fisch, peking-ente im schaufenster… chintatown ist immer auch ein ausflug in eine andere kultur. 

all smiles colgate families on toothpaste boxes, kitsch and caboodle, fruit- and vegetable stands, spices, [smelly] dried fish, roast peking duck in the window… chinatown is also a trip into another kind of culture.

unschlagbar grandios finde ich ja immer die naturgetreuen plastik-gerichte im schaufenster… quasi als speisekartenersatz. diese hätte ich alle gern mitgenommen. sie würden vermutlich jetzt an unserer küchenwand hängen. so gefüllte zierteller hätten ja was! lustig!

i always adore these true-to-life plastic meals displayed in the windows as a kind of paper menu substitute. i loved to have them and display them on our kitchen wall at home… ornamental plates with food on the wall would be freakin’ funny, don’t you think?

und dann gibt’s da noch KENSINGTON MARKET als etwas anderes neighborhood. die ecke zwischen college und dundas street, westlich der spadina avenue ist nicht nur durch seine victorianischen häuser geprägt, sondern auch durch sein quirliges hippy-flair.

and then there is KENSINGTON MARKET as a quirky kind of neighborhood. located between college and dundas street, west of spadina avenue, it’s not only marked by it’s victorian architecture but also by it’s lively hippy flair.

leider hatten an dem tag die meisten geschäfte geschlossen. es war CANADA DAY, kanadas nationalfeiertag, aber wir bummelten trotzdem durch die strassen, gesäumt von cafés, restaurants, vintage-shops, obst-und gemüsehändlern, plattenläden und shops mit allerhand tinnef. HIER gibt es übrigens einen tollen überblick über alle shops und lokale.

that day we took a walk at kensington was CANADA DAY the national holiday of the canadians. it was a pity that most of the shops were closed. but we enjoyed our walk along the streets with all the cafés, restaurants, grocery stores, vintage and vinyl shops and shops with all kinds of funny stuff anyway. you can find an awesome shop, café and restaurant overview HERE by the way.

… und bei BUNGALOW [achtung, bei klick dibadibadubidu-musik! ;)] bereute ich bereits, nicht einen container gemietet zu haben, in dem all das coole vintage zeugs, das ich hier sah [und auch noch auf der restlichen reise sehen sollte] nach hause verschifft werden konnte.

… and at BUNGALOW [beware, there’s some dibadibadubidu-music when clicking the link! ;)] i was regretting not having booked a big container for shipping all the awesome vintage stuff i saw here [and i would see later on our trip] back home to germany.

ich muss ganz ehrlicherweise gestehen, dass die große schockliebe, die mich bei urlaubsorten gern öfter mal überfällt, bei toronto tatsächlich ausblieb. ich kann gar nicht genau sagen, woran es lag… vielleicht fand ich toronto insgesamt einfach zu “unspeziell”? vielleicht bin ich auch nur oberflächlich und verschnuckt? keine ahnung. ich fühle mich ja fast schuldig deswegen, aber so ist es nunmal. doch ich muss auch sagen, dass orte, wie KENSINGTON MARKET mich dann doch ein wenig versöhnt haben. es lebe das schrullige!!!

well, i really must admit, that in toronto i somehow missed that huge love flash, that i often feel at places we travel. i don’t know exactly what the reason was… maybe i found toronto too “unspecific”, maybe i’m just a shallow, spoiled dork? i have no idea. i almost feel sorry because of that, but that’s just the way i experienced it. but i must also say that places like KENSINGTON MARKET really made me feel reconciled again. long live quirkiness!

P.S. ihr lieben, ich hatte eigentlich vor, unsere reise chronologisch zu bloggen… aber ich stelle fest, mich drängt es einfach, dinge früher zu erzählen, die eigentlich später passiert sind. einfach weil sie mir mehr am herzen liegen als andere.  und so’n bisschen bunte mischung schadet ja auch nie, nech? nächste woche geht es also IRGENDWO weiter, mal sehen, wonach mir der sinn steht. oder wollt IHR [also wohl vor allem die unter euch, die unsere reise ja auf INSTAGRAM sehr zeitnah verfolgt haben] irgendetwas spezielles jetzt sofort und unbedingt gleich und gar nicht später wissen? dann raus damit.

P.S. dear lovelies, originally i planned to post about this trip in chronological order…. but i feel urged to tell things earlier than they happened, just because they are closer to my heart. i think a little disorder potpourri doesn’t hurt anyone, right? so next week i’ll jump to wherever my heart tells me. or maybe YOU [which probably means the ones of you who followed our trip in real-time on INSTAGRAM] do have any preference for me, what story to tell? if so… just let me know.
