DIY | smiley beanie

we girls went for some stroll through the town last week and we saw a cool beanie hat the young fräulein really liked. it was thin grey jersey fabric, completely uncasted and hastily sewn [well, made in china], neon pink smiley print, that’s it… for 17,95 euro. nope! we left that shop without it.

you wonder where we got this one then? we made it ourselves! i sewed it according to the BEANIE eBook by nähwana. i left out the attached fringe though and extended the main part a bit instead [the fräulein wanted to have the uncasted, raw look of the hat in the store].

what would madonna do? na, ganz klar… die hätte die mütze einfach gekauft, genug kohle hat sie ja. vielleicht sollte auf dem bleistift lieber stehen, “what would mc gyver do?” aber ich schweife ab. der rest war ganz simpel… ich habe erst einmal einen smiley auf papier gezeichnet. die mützenteile habe ich aus jersey zugeschnitten. ein nailhead sternchen zum aufbügeln habe ich noch in den tiefen meines nähkrams gefunden, der sollte später das eine auge werden. ein set mit neon-textilfarben hatte ich neulich schon mal besorgt. man kann ja nie wissen, wann man die mal braucht. ;)
what would madonna do? it’s completely clear… she would have bought that beanie. after all she has enough money. so maybe the pencil better should say “what would mc gyver do?”. but i deviate from the subject. the rest was all simple… i scribbled a smiley on a piece of paper and i cut the fabric according to the pattern. i found a small nailhead star to iron-on in my sewing stuff and decided to take it as a second smiley-eye. luckily i got me some neon fabric paint lately, you never now when you will need it. ;)

i took my smiley sketch and cut out a stencil which i fixed to the fabric [front part of the beanie] using temporary adhesive spray [i always have some here for my machine embroidery]. you’re better not stingy with the adhesive as it has to be fixed very carefully. you don’t want to have the paint creeping under your stencil. of course using freezer paper is a more elegant way to deal with this job, but i didn’t have any.
after fixing the stencil i started color in the smiley in neon pink. after the paint dried off i painted a second layer, because unfortunately i got myself paint for light colored fabrics. next time i look for some suitable for dark fabrics as well. when it was completely dry i peeled off the paper [always a jittery moment].. and i was all pleased by the result. sharp lines and everything fine! the next step was ironing-on the little nailhead star, the fabric paint also had to be fixed to be washable by ironing. finally i sewed up the beanie with a few, quick seams. and…

… SMILE!!!

DO IT YOURSELF

DIY ::: neon doily sweater

could also be a cake landing place or so, there on my new, pimped sweater! i love doilies. and i love neon. why not combining both?

if you want to try it yourself, you’ll need: a t-shirt, sweater or tank top whatever [i was lazy, so mine was a purchased one. you can also sew one yourself. i think a striped pattern with neon doily would  be very cool as well!] and this also works for tote bags or pillows of course … then you’ll need one of granny’s doilies in a matching size, some neon fabric paint [please read the instructions first], a flat paint brush, some fixing pins and a sewing machine [you can also sew by hand of course, it only takes a bit more time].

i just painted a big neon-red cross on the doily, let the paint dry and fixed it by ironing. it hadn’t to be too neat for my personal taste… chop, chop, finished!

after that i placed and fixed the doily on the sweater using some pins and sewed it on with a few stitches. that’s it! have fun trying it out if you like the idea!

it even glows without a bulb! | hardly recognizable…  that liverwurst lampshade! it was subjected to a marginal rejuvenating cure…

… restrained, old-maidish color that was yesterday. the fashionable lampshade dresses in neon!

so here is the how-to: the liverwurst pink (or was it salmon pie color?) fabric had to go. i’m sorry but i didn’t think it was worth recycling so i dumped it quite heartlessly.

then i arranged all materials to please your dear readers eye. i roughened the white wire lampshade slightly with an abrasive sponge to…

… prepare it for the spray paint. i recomment to cover the ground lavishly on a windy day. otherwise you might have to scrub the path in front of your house on your knees for hours to get rid of the whiff of neon again. ^^ by the way my neighbor said… “whao… you won’t need a bulb for that!” i got the notion that she wasn’t that enthusiastic about that beaming color as i was myself.

while the painted lampshade was drying (actually there were two), i prepared the next step. i took some ironing beads in MAXI size…

hier sieht man schön den größenunterschied.

you can see the difference in size here.

the inspiration for this project i found in this earphone CORD idea by the way! so i cut the big beads open with a sharp cutter…

… and strut open to clip them over the wire. the beads close up around the wire again…

after having a lot of working patience and kinda aching hands the lampshade finally looks like this!

it’s such an eye catcher hanging above our dining table… i’m all smitten!

if all this is not enough for you and you’re looking for a even bigger kick, you can add some chandelier-like luster elements!

they can be made using the small ironing beads, just arrange shapes you like and iron according to instructions…

… then hang them onto the lampshade! voilà!
luzie loved this version. i thought it was too much playfulness for me so i took them off again. but we’ll use them to embellish a second lampshade we also made… a  small pink one for luzie.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | DIY tutorial | vasen auffrischung mit neon und tafel-farbe | vases makeover with neon and chalkboard color

actually there’s nothing beaming yet… it’s only in my imagination. but that will change very quickly because these green matt finished country style vases don’t suit my taste anymore.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | DIY tutorial | vasen auffrischung mit neon und tafel-farbe | vases makeover with neon and chalkboard color

so i tackled them with spray paint… neonPINK for luzie and neonORANGE for me.

luzia pimpinella BLOG | DIY tutorial | vasen auffrischung mit neon und tafel-farbe | vases makeover with neon and chalkboard color

i didn’t spray the bottom third accurately as it was the place for another color gadget. i masked it with tape…

so if there’s any doubt about what’s in the vase now, you can easily write a hint on it… using a chalk pencil! ;)
