sturmfront sandy update

stormfront sandy update

NYC dogs in yellow raincoats still have to do their poop-thing.

two hours ago (5 p.m. local time) i peeped around the corner of the street… some strong gusts of wind already blew up 5th avenue… and still… NYC dogs in yellow raincoats still have to do their poop-thing. ;). there’s KOREA TOWN (32th street) at the next block and the korean people imperturbably still run their businesses. many restaurants are open. so we just had korean picnick on our hotel bed. solely the writing on the chop stick packaging sounds a bit out of place today.

you can hear some winds by now, but not that much. for the first time, i’m kinda glad that our windows are point to the backside of the building into a small, tight atrium. that keeps most of the storm noises out, wich might have freaked us out. it’s surely less scary this way. speaking of scary things… do large scale patterned hotel carpets also remind you of SHINING? this is what comes to my mind every time… redrum redrum redrum… excuse my gallows humor. it’s a must right now.

TRAVEL

waiting for the frankenstorm!

hi lovelies… just dropped in for a quick sign of life from over here at the stormfront! there are probably better times to visit NYC, but we’re here and we definitely keep our northern-german chin up! the stiff breeze called SANDY didn’t arrive here in our place yet. we’re now waiting for things to come.

we got ourselves some supplies yesterday and bought some food and candles in case of a power outage. luckily our hotel, the WOLCOTT , is located in midtowm manhattan (31st street between broadway and 5th avenue), it’s not in the evacuation zone… so we’re sitting in our hotel room right now trying to keep things kinda cozy.

this morning we went out for a walk. we had a bit of rain over night, but there are still no remarkable signs of the approaching hurricane. a little windy, a little rainy… but everything still feels totally relaxed so far. well, exept for the personal suspense. the deli across the street is still open. they were not sold out at all… there’s still plenty of water and food. i imagine though that somewhere downtown near the waterfronts the situation is more tensed up. we avoid turning on the TV as the pictures might freak luzie out. until now she’s still relaxed and not frightened at all. better it stays this way. i suppose her mood might change when seeing what’s going on in some other more affected places.

on the streets i saw more gumboots than usual. the stores are mostly closed and the subway shut down service yesterday at 7 pm. i must admit it’s a weird feeling. the last few days i asked a lot of locals if they were afraid. everybody anwsered ” NO, not that much!”. that was kinda relieving. after all we europeans are not really used to deal with hurricanes.

as i said…. the TV news can make you quite nervous, but everyone is hoping for less damage than expected. many shops perpared their front doors with sand bags to reduce water flooding as they expect heavy rains here in midtown. flowers are solely sold inside today. i wonder if anybody really buys some? at least there have been sold lots of umbrellas today.

i saw some guys from the times square alliance still cleaning up the streets this morning. why? there will be probably a lot more to be cleaned up tommorrow! ridiculous to let them work. i hope these tough guys are safe and sound at home now. MACY’s didn’t open today, they told their staff to stay at home. i already saw many umbrella victims along the way… but also bigger things collapsed. i’m glad only to be on the 9th floor here in the hotel and that our windows point to the backside of the building into a tight atrium… a fact that i usually don’t love that much.

got an awful feeling looking at the homeless on the streets. will they find shelter when the storm will rage over the city? i hope so. you can feel it starts now. feeling kinga funky meanwhile. but after all we have all those lucky pennies we found yesterday, right? … just hope everything will be good in the end.

bei aller liebe…

what we do for love…

… people do strange things for love. like splashing about in the BETHESDA FOUNTAIN in new york city’s CENTRAL PARK dressed i a bridal gown in october. all for LOVE… but nope, i guess i wouldn’t do it. but it was surely fascinating to watch for the surrounding crowd. i hope she had a second wedding dress…

kinderherzens himmelreich

a kids heart’s heaven

whether your are still a child or you are only young at heart… you just gotta love FAO SCHWARZ.

the legendary toy store on 767 fifth avenue, founded by the german immigrant frederick august otto schwarz in 1862, wows little people as well as big ones. it is definitely a must see, when you’re visiting new york city with children.

bet many of you know the store from the movies remembering tom hanks bouncing about on the giant piano in the movie BIG 1988. it’s probably the biggest attraction of the house, but…

i there’s something even more fascinating than this… the MUPPET WHATNOT WORKSHOP on the first floor.

there you can create your own MUPPET PUPPET.. you choose from bald torsos, pick hair, eyes…

you dress them up with fancy clothes and chic accessiores… if you like to make your own muppet ONLINE just for fun, check THIS out!

JIM HENSON once said: the most sophisticated people i know – inside they are all children.”…  so let’s all pamper our inner child! ;)

ich musste um erlaubnis bitten…

i had to ask for permission…

… to show you this book, because the title of this travel guide says “not for parents!”. you know we three are big new york city fans, so our little one graciously allowed us to peek inside. so let’s record first that not only kids but also adults may enjoy this travel guide a lot!
i’d also like to note that this new york KIDS travel guide is supposed to be exciting, colorful and entertaining. it offers funny facts as well as a heap of the worth knowing. but it might not be appreciated by parents who expect a mini-version of an adult guide (with all it’s intellectual claim and involved deadly dullness). i got the feeling that some of them wrote the first reviews on amazon… no offence meant! ;) it is for kids only!

kinder erfahren hier, was kinder wirklich interessiert… warum nennt man NYC auch BIG APPLE?
the kids get to know things that are really interesting for kids… like the reason why NY ist called the BIG APPLE!? … or why do some people call it GOTHAM CIY? do you now that one of the first battles of america’s independence was fought in brooklyn? i didn’t… so even adults will learn from this book.

we get to know that the oasis in the heart of new york, the CENTRAL PARK, was a swamp in former times.

the architecture section tells us about the awsome snail loop of the GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM and how they built the beautiful BROOKLYN BRIDGE. we also learn that the MOMA was opened by some fearless women, that the STATUE OF LIBERTY is a french mademoiselle and why there is a bull running around WALL STREET.

and did you know that the street that we all loved so much in our childhood, the SESAME STREET, is inspired by the AMSTERDAM AVENUE in new york city? do you remember all these adorable creatures by JIM HENSON? i’m going to show you some more tomorrow… ;)

there are also some exciting stories about rats down the subway, alligators in the canalization and aliens landing in manhattan.

the page about the cops made me grin. it reminded me of one of luzie’s most exciting and favorite vacation stories… a police car stopped right beside us with squealing tires. two cops jumped out and ran after some skaters. one of the skater was arrested with handcuffs and everything…. just like in a movie. another double page of this book is dedicated to the heroes of the city… the fireman. i can tell that these guys are quite impressing and they are never to busy to smile and wave at a little girl waiting at a traffic ight… even if the sirenes are howling on their way to fight a fire.

ha! of course we saw him life … the NAKED COWBOY on TIMES SQUARE

da isser… *eeeek*

there he is… *eeek*

new york city  is a melting pot of cultures and religions… so somehow it feels just natural that it’s the home of the UNITED NATIONS as well… we learn about that and much more.

so even if it’s forbidden for me as a parent… i really love this little travel guide! and by the way… the  mini lego statue of liberty is mine… mine… mine!
P.S. there are more totally cool and crazy kids travel guides published by national geographic and lonely planet: PARIS, LONDON und ROME. we also got the one for rome, because summer will come soon! ;)

unten in der straße…

down the street…
there is a NYC taxi parking! that’s what my little one said to me coming back from a bike ride on sunday. wat? really? here in the boonies? although i really didn’t want to got out that foggy and chilly day i took my cam and my favorite little, yellow souvenir to have a look…
it’s no secret that i love yellow cabs. i want one, too. i’d even clean it regularly… i promise… ;)

drive-by & back seat shots…

… eines NYC taxifahrers.
… of a NYC taxi driver.
the tended blog reader surely knows about my love for new york city. as well as about october trips we made the last few years. this year we won’t go… i must admit, i feel kinda wistfully right now.
DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS – photographs by a New York taxi driverund THE NEW YORK TAXI BACK SEAT BOOK

that’s why two books are lying on our coffee table… not only because they match the current flower decoration so well (*lol*) but also for wishful browsing through the photographs. DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS – photographs by a New York taxi driver and THE NEW YORK TAXI BACK SEAT BOOK
when i see this photo in the book i ask myself…
… if it was taken here in this street where i shot this picture above last october!?
with his black and white photographs DAVID BRADFORD creates a very personal portrait of his city. he is no taxi driver shooting pictures but more a photographing artist driving a taxi. i love the view through his lense.
did you know that it’s almost impossible to get a taxi between 4 and 5 p.m.? it’s change of shift time…

oh well, the flowers in taxi color are camomile by the way. i had to improvise and steal them at the field since every florist in this town ingores my whish for CRASPEDIA. i think they are pretty as well. although the smell reminds me of the upcoming flu season…

[EDIT: thank you, NATALIE for your
botanical advice! it is TANSY MUSTARD indeed! i thought it was some
sort of leaf-less comomile because of the strong smell. you live and
leran!]
i did also sew up some yellow wanderlust…

to some NYC taxi cab zipper pouch… made for travel documents and all that little stuff you need when travelling. i am going to keep one myself. hopefully it will travel with me to my favorite city next year again. the others now travel to my little SHOP to wait for a connecting flight to wherever. ;)

sonntags im museum
a sunday at the museum
no, we haven’t been to the museum today. actually we didn’t even take one step outside. considering the awful weather we preferred to make ourselves comfy at home!
but anyway we can take a walk at the museum together … virtually…. at the METROPOLITAN MUSEUM of ART. wanna join?

and now… quickly back on the couch again!

more street shots…

first i’d like to thank YOU for all your feedback on my STREET PHOTOGRAPHY posting the other day. i am so excited to hear that the spirit of the photos seem to jump over. that’s awesome!
moreover it’s like NYC has put it’s spell on many of you out there. if you love the city i got one book tip for you (sorry, i really don’t know if it’s available in english…) EIN JAHR IN NEW YORK: reise in den alltag (= ONE YEAR IN NEW YORK: a journey into everyday life)… the story is authentic, entertaining and lively. you can read it through in just one evening on the sofa if you want to.
talking about reading books… well, i am that kinda PICTURE BOOK gal. i can’t deny it. i always think i am too squirrely to find some reading leisure… so i probably am a member of the un-reading majority. i can deal with that. if YOU belong to the LESENDE MINDERHEIT (= reading minority) you might love the new book blog of frau kännchen and frau hoppenstedt (sorry again, dear foreign readers, this is about books in german language, but maybe you want to improve your german skills!?)…
but now… more PICTURES please for the more visual addicted people… ;)

street photography
i am an urban soul at heart… i rather love big cities more than the countryside. i like walking and watching in concrete jungles. it’s real real life you get to see. unadorned. maybe it’s just because there is less nature that could attract your eye with it’s genuine beauty? what we see instead is the human being in its selfbuild environment, in it’s natural habitat. looking through the lens it often seems bizarr… sometimes beautiful, often ugly… but yet always fascinating.
i got this book as a christmas gift… STREET PHOTOGRAPHY NOW! i browsed through it countless times and every time i do i spot something new. street photography shows people’s everyday world from a different perspective. it shows details that we might not notice walking by. it is able to see the particular in the ordinary.
{book quote by markus hartel}

street photography shows one moment at a glance that can tell a whole story. sometimes you are lucky to catch one of them… and sometimes it’s gone before you can even grab your camera. many shots i didn’t make live in my head… for some of them i even grieve.

am sonntag vor drei wochen…

on sunday three weeks ago…
… we went to a flea maket. last year. well, we already learned that the new yorkers seem to have the right touch for stunning locations when it comes to flea markets.
you can see the amazing building of the former williamsburg savings bank on hanson place before you even leave the subway station atlantic ave. …

… and this is the place where you can find the brooklyn flea.

no exaggerating when i said stunning, right?
let’s take a stroll…

*lach*
by the way… as impressing as the whole building were the former vaults of the bank where you can find market stands as well. i’ve never seen so huge doors before! *lol*

LOVE me a LOMO

… my new toy and me on my birthday. actually i felt richly gifted being able to spend my day with my little family in my favorite city, but when the LOMOGRAPHY fisheye came my way and shouted out “please take me home, mrs. pimpi!” i could not restist to gift myself once more.
it has been quite a while since i shot film. i became aware that the younger generation doesn’t even know anything about analog shooting, when… the girl behind the drugstore counter didn’t know what i mean when i asked for some 400 ASA roll of film… when my daughter asked me why i opened the camera and if it was broken as i placed the film. ummm… yeah.
then when i was ready to shoot it took me a while until  i stopped staring at the backside of the camera like a dork after every single CLICK…  to see some instant result that wasn’t there of course. i must admit that shooting analog needs some skill in being patient again. having to wait for the results to come back from lab-processing is quite a tough one! but yesterday i finally received my order…
OK, not every shot turned out good. i will have to practice…  but some shots really freak me out! what fun!
really LOVE my funny LOMO…

chelsea market NYC

the chelsea market is a food court and shopping mall in a former bakery factory complex where the oreo cookie was invented almost 100 years ago. i really love that industrial design of the building… and the halloween decoration in october!

… moreover the burgers at FRIEDMAN’s LUNCH are delish! ;)

von diesen dingelchen träume ich noch…

still dreaming of these thingies…
until the other day i only knew MACARONS from pictures. i did not happen to try some yet and to be honest i didn’t even think they would taste as wonderful as they look like…
and actually they really don’t. they taste BOOMBASTIC!

… hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!
we had raspberry, peanut butter (those kinda smurf-colored ones… my special favorites!), cinnamon and lemon. my gosh… and now where do i get them here, please? after all i can’t wait until i will come around the MACARON CAFÉ again!
has someone of you ever made some yourself? is it even possible for a mortal human being to make them? … questions… questions…

… and off we go, over the williamsburg bridge back to manhattan!
EDIT:
p.s. because some of you were wildketting here and on facebook… YES! there are some very different theories about shoes on a wire… here you can read about SHOEFITI! ;) my personal theorie is, that in most people do this just for fun… and (as always) where’s one lonely shoe’s hung over a wire more company will follow soon. my two cents.
