letzte woche hatte ich ja angekündigt, euch ein bisschen mehr vom beschaulichen ROCKPORT zu zeigen. aber mir kommt ja gerne mal ein spontaner gedanke dazwischen und so geht es jetzt stattdessen, passend zum BIWYFI-thema der woche, nach OBEN! ich habe nämlich seit jahren ein ganz klares lieblingsOBEN und das ist über den dächern von NEW YORK.
weil es ja nun schon lange kein geheimnis ist, dass wir NYC sehr lieben und wir dort schon öfter waren, als an einem anderen ort auf der welt, wird mir regelmäßig die frage gestellt: “was muss ich denn unbedigt sehen?. und auch wenn viele meinen, ich müsste dann gleich mit supertollen geheimtipps aufwarten, antworte ich: “erst einmal den touri-kram!”. jetzt mal echt! wieso ist es eigentlich immer so schrecklich verpöhnt, sich erst einmal die touristen-attraktionen anzusehen? schließlich in man als tourist dort. punkt! manche tun so, als wäre das wort allein schon eine schande. nun ja… was sehenswürdigkeiten angeht, hat der big apple nunmal auch so einiges zu bieten, daran kommt keiner vorbei, auch nicht der, der kein touri sein will! nehmen wir allein den blick vom TOP OF THE ROCK oder auch vom EMPIRE STATE BUILDING. der verschlägt uns auch beim x-ten mal noch immer den atem… immer wieder.
well, i know, last week i was announcing to show you some more of beautiful ROCKPORT. but one other thing spontaneously popped up in my mind, looking at the current BIWYFI theme UP! because when it comes to ups i do have a clear favorite up. it’s being UP and overlooking the rooftops of NEW YORK.
it’s no secret that we love NYC so much that we travelled there more often than to any other place in the world. so i get frequent mails with the question: “what is a must-see/visit the city?” i guess most of them expect me to come up with some super secret insider tipps, but i like to answer: “first go and see all that tourist stuff!”. seriously! what is so very bad about the typical tourist-tour and landmarks? why do many people feel so frowned upon being a tourist? after all you simply are one when going to foreign places. period! well, and besides that, the big apple has amazing stuff to offer when it comes to landmarks! you just can’t ingnore places like TOP OF THE ROCK or the EMPIRE STATE BUILDING. the views from up there will always and forever be breathtaking… time after time.
“concrete jungle where dreams are made of…” wunderschön in meinen augen. new york ist ein ganz einzigartiger makrokosmos mit ganz eigenen gesetzen, einem eigenen vibe und einem eigenen flow [den man im übrigen auch UNTEN spürt]. was es bedeutet, wenn dieser flow jäh unterbrochen wird, haben wir erlebt, als hurricane SANDY über die stadt kam. aber ich schweife schon wieder ab…
viele von den leuten, die mich nach tipps fragen, haben wenig zeit. oft sind sie nur ein paar tage in new york und machen einen zwischenstop. wenn man sich dann also entscheiden muss, von wo man den blick auf die wolkenkratzer genießen soll, würde ich immer für die aussicht vom TOP OF THE ROCK plädieren! die sicht auf das EMPIRE STATE BUILDING ist so viel spektakulärer als der blick vom empire state selbst. es überragt noch immer alles um sich herum und wirkt dabei fast majestetisch. auf der anderen seite blickt man zudem auf den CENTRAL PARK, der vor einem liegt wie eine grüne wiese inmitten einer beton-wüste. man versteht, warum den new yorkern ihre großen und kleinen oasen so am herzen liegen.
“concrete jungle where dreams are made of…” so beautiful in my eyes. new york is such a unique macrocosm, having it’s own rules, a very own vibe and a special flow. [you can even feel it UNDERNEATH]. we experienced the strange interruption of this flow when hurricane SANDY came. but i disgress again…
many of the people who ask me for tipps, only spend a few days in the city. some just stay for a stop over to somwhere else. so there’s often not enough time to see everything. when it comes to a view from UP, i always recommend to go for TOP OF THE ROCK! to be able to look onto the EMPIRE STATE BULDING is even more spectacular that look down from it. it still outshines everything around so majestically. while on the other side of the platform you can overlook the beautiful CENTRAL PARK, that lies like a green meadow in midst of a concrete desert. one can feel why the new yorkers cherish their big and small green oases so much,
dafür kann die aussicht vom EMPIRE STATE BUILDING ganz klar mit dem blick auf das CHRYSLER BUILDING punkten. für mich die schönste architektur aller zeiten! außerdem freue ich mich immer wie ein kleinkind, wenn ich unten im häuser-wirrwarr unser HOTEL entdecke [das gebäude mit dem grünen dach, da unten links!]… genauso, wie mein herz einen kleinen hüpfer macht, wenn ich als erstes das empire state erblicke, wenn ich aus der lobby heraustrete und nach OBEN schaue. “no place in the world that can compare”. auch da hat alicia keys einfach recht.
on the other hand, the empire state building can definitely score with a gorgeous view onto the CHRYSLER BUILDING. which has the most beautiful architecture of all times, if you ask me! personally, i’m always merry as a lark to spot our HOTEL from up there [it’s the building with the green roof, down there on the left!]… and my hearts also skip a beat when i step out of the hotel and the first thing i see UP there is the empire state. “no place in the world that can compare”. alicia keys is so true.
P.S. eigentlich habe ich ja tendenziell höhenangst. das habe ich neulich bei der POTT-TOUR von juli auch mal wieder ordentlich zu spüren bekommen, als ich es nicht mal auf die erste plattform des tetraeders schaffte. superpeinlich. zu meiner entschuldigung muss ich allerdings sagen, dass die konstruktion schrecklich wackelte und man auf metallgittern gehen musste! durch die man durchgucken konnte! das finde ich sowas von gruselig! deswegen bin ich ziemlich froh. dass mir stabile gebäude unter den füßen den großteil meiner angst nehmen. sonst könnte ich solche ausblicke nie genießen. hach…
P.S. actually i do have a bit of vertigo. i felt it the other day at the ruhrPOTT-TOUR arranged by juli when i tried to climb the triangular pyramide. i didn’t even reach the first plattform. it was embarrassing, but hey, the whole thing was shaking and we had to walk on metal grid. so no way! but after all i feel less intimidated by solid buildings. lucky me, because otherwise i would miss that kind of magnificent view…
