Continue Reading

let’s go for some HTC urban adventure!

i promised you yesterday… so let’s go on some urban adventure to zagreb’s ABANDONED PLACES together with a bunch of international journalists and blogger-colleagues. a HTC one X was already waiting for me at breakfast. it was supposed to be my buddy. i had a black one in front of me, my polish colleague had a white one… we switched the phones. it said “im the ONE you’ve been waiting for”… quite self confident! so let’s see if the camera of this smartphone will keep this promise.

the photographs that willl follow were taken with the HTC one X… either in a classic way or (the small square ones) edited and uploaded with the instagram.app for ANDROID smartphones. you will find some photos that have been taken by a pro photographer who was with us (sweet LISA)… they are watermarked with “photo by HTC”. it’s totally awesome to have some group shots and some pictures of myself as well, as i am usually invisible behind the lens…

my first impression: the display is a stunner… it’s large and the graphic is pin sharp. i like!

we got a first briefing for the camera functions. the intended reader already knows that i’m smitten with any kind of PANORAMA photography… so i was really looking forward to test this feature! i took a first shot right at place. ok, i didn’t cover myself with glory with that picture, but i should be having some better opportunities for some great panoramic shots later.

then we got a security briefing by our URBAN EXPLORER GUIDES for the day. they are professionally going on trips like this, exploring abandoned and quite spooky places. some of them had even been to chernobyl! unbelievable… if you are interested in their activities, don’t miss to check out their blog blog CROATIAN INFILTRATION or their FACEBOOKpage. there are URBAN EXLORERS all over the world by the way.

then we started off… our first location was  KERESTINEC CASTLE. the estate is usually closed off to public but the crew got an exclusive grant from zagreb’s mayor to visit and axplore the abandoned buiding. in world war II the facility was used as a prisoner of war camp and was later reformed into a prison. it has been shut since the 80s and nature is conquering the place back again.

in this picture KEVIN and his buddy JAMIE (owner of chasing saftey media) are testing the LOW LIGHT mode of the HTC cam. i personally think it’s quite a cool feature when you have to deal with situations when you have just a little light. the results are really respectable! i like!
by the way, it has been a pleasure to have been in one explorer team with these guys. i really laughed a lot… no wonder, because KEVIN is a COMEDY ACTOR! :)

der nächste stop war BIZEK QUARRY….

next stop was BIZEK QUARRY…

… ein stillgelegter steinbruch… überirdisch und unterirdisch.

… an abandonned place over- and underground.

here we needed the head torches we had been provided with for the first time. the downstairs tunnels of the quarry were pinch black… bat encounter included.

the third location of the day was the MEDIKA MUSEUM OF STREET ART, a place that captures the spirit and art of urban zagreb. a superb opportunity to catch some strong colors with the HTC one X.

unfortunately we’ve been pressed by time, because lunch was already waiting for us. i would have loved to stay longer.

seebrasselunch was just like i remember it from some childhood summer holidays we spent in croatia… rustic and yummy! if you’re going to visit some day zagreb i can really recommend the grilled seabrass at POD GRICKIM TOPOM. the restaurant has a stunning view over the city of zagreb.

after lunch we started off again to the fourth location… to the disused flour mill  PAROMLIN. the building is marked by several fires and quite an experience… as well as it’s keeper NICOLA who ist a croatian original.

unbelievable…  30-40 years old paper flour bags lay all around without any sign of dissolution. NICOLA believes that there is some magical climate in the mill… he vows that he has the most vivid dreams when sleeping inside this house… ;)

man beachte übrigens ganz rechts die “sights of special interest”…;)

please note the “sights of special interest” on the right… ;)

the rooftop of the old flour mill was the most perfect place for experiencing the PANORAMA mode. i really think this is my favorite camera feature of the HTC one X. shots like this show the whole scenery, not only a detail… i just love that! maybe you like to check out the first video HERE to see how this works.

i really love this JUMP shot that lisa the photographer took of our team. it’s such a great souvenir of  an amazing day!

after the tour NICOLA waited with some homemade speciality for us… self distilled honey liquor.

… that was quite a burner but still amazing yummy!

NICOLA says goodbye to NICOLE…what a fella!

the last stop was the former villa of ANTE PAVELIC. it now stands in ruins and is a site for paintballers. but the intricate tunnel system of the dictator is still intact. he surely had his reasons to be paranoid back then.
once a again the tunnels were pinch black. i mean as dark as dark can be! you couldn’t even imagine your own hand right in front of your eyes. when the torches went off it felt nightmarish quite to me.   the following shots were taken by lisa using a very long exposure with her DSLR…. just to have a glimpse of it all….

i was so glad when i was able to breathe fresh air again…

… and i was looking forward to a little break, a warm shower and a lovely evening together with all others!
at the end of our tour let me point out on a few more features the HTC one X camera offers… like the
possibility to capture VIDEO and sharp pictures at the same time… or to use CONTINUOUS SHOOTING… clickclickclickclick. you can find some more information about both modes HERE. moreover i think the SLOW MOTION video mode is quite cool. i’ll go for these features our summer holiday trip for sure.

the evening we spent together with the whole bunch at the GREEN GOLD CLUB (and later at some bar in the city) war awesome funny, lovely, yummy, loud and long…
folks, that was such a terrific experience. let me say thank you for such a good time and a perfect organization to stu from HTC, to lovely melissa & orla from FEVER  (by the way… melissa is blogging, too, on THREE BAD MICE) and to the guys from the CROATIAN INFILTRATION GROUP. don’t hesitate to call me again… ;)
