[the imperial residence]. there are not only glamorous ceremonial rooms with giant chandeliers and artful murals inside, but also small homes of the former servants, that are still occupied by their descendants. another few steps further and you’ll enter the pretty historic center through a gate. take a walk with me, ingore the crowd and get enchanted…
da muss man sich doch schockverlieben, oder?
you gotta love this, don’t you?
THANK YOU to JUST AWAY for inviting me on this press trip! it was a pleasure! i affirm to all my dear READERS though that my enthusiasm about things and my point of view will always be my very own.
you either love them or leave them… but for us christmas markets just belong to advent time. where else should we get our yummy schmalzkuchen and get ourselves icing-sugar dusted coats? or what would mr. P and i do withut our sweet memories of just-in-love mullet wine rendevous at the aorable BRAUNSCHWEIGER WEIHNACHTSMARKT. it has been ages since then and we never went there again, although we always planned to. year after year. well, but we finally made it to the christmas market in LÜBECK lately…
the medivial historic center really is a beautiful backdrop for markets like these. bummer, that we weren’t the only ones who see it that way… so of course we found yourself in midst of crowds. that sadly dulls the romantic atmosphere a lot. we usually avoid markets where busses of people are arriving all day long. but this time we dared to go for a trip. note to self: next time take a weekday off and don’t go at the weekend!
mr. P. an i lived at NUREMBERG for four years. yes, that town where the worlds famous CHRISTKINDELSMARKT is located. besides all our fondness for christmas markets we did only go a few time during our stay. actually we went when we had family or friends as guest who wanted to see it. you know sometimes too much is really too much and the christkindelsmarkt really can be a bit of too too much. we never warmed to it.
we prefer the smaller christmas markets. the ones that somehow keep a little of their spirit although they are popular and well attended. for example we like to visit the market in LÜNEBURG. you can easily combine a christmas market stroll and some awesome gift shopping in this beautiful town. and sometimes we plan to visit our best friends in rheine in early advent time around SAINT NICHOLAS DAY. because there is NIKOLAUSMARKT in the adorable little town of TECKLENBURG which is just nearby. [i really don’t have a clue why i can’t find any pictures i took there…]
speaking about our hamburg markets, i must admit that we always avoid the huge market in front of the HAMBURGER RATHAUS [ = town hall]. the masses of people are annoying, although the backdrop is so very beautiful. we better go to the FLEETINSEL, where a smaller and more laid back market is located. but our favorite one is the christmas market is at the GÄNSEMARKT…
it’s a small one with open fire and that little carousel. the one that served our daughter for her very first ride. i sat in the backseat of a little car, knees at my chin, and still can hear that screaming “i drive jeep! i drive jeep!” when she pressed the button in the front. over and over again. she was keeping a straight face all the time. highly concentrated. it was her kind of speciality when she was little: keeping a pokerface and never showing anyone that she was actually having a blast!. maybe it’s that kind of story why i love christmas markets so much. there are precious memories made at this place….
what abou you? do you love christmas markets or do you avoid them? do you even have some at your place? which are your favorites? which are especially beautiful and idyllic to you?
