ich mach mir die welt…

create the world…
… to my own please… and i love it COLORful! the day when i signed up for the BRIGITTE-kreativ-blog-award, i wasn’t able to fall asleep. what if i was picked by the jury and i couldn’t come up with any good idea? well, after all the lack of sleep and pondering turned out to be something good because the globe collection on the book shelves caught my eye. suddenly i knew i would create something using a globe.
if you are a frequent reader you know about my love for vintage globes and my undeniable passion for travelling. after having this sleepless night many weeks ago some other ideas for a contest entry crossed my mind. but only my first idea felt right in the end… because, somehow it’s really “ME”…

i took a vintage globe, probably from the 70s like me, and turned it into an invidual home deco object…

… if you got a restless travelling heart yourself.. you wanna try yourself maybe…

for this DIY project i was able to just pick a globe from my vintage collection. if you’re not that crazy collector look for them at flea markets. you can get them for a few bucks, because most of the sellers  are just glad not to have them carry back home. you can also find some at the vintage department of dawanda or etsy and at online-auctions.

additionally you’ll need… water based glue [water based wood glue, découpage glue or mod podge also works fine], different paint brushes, transparent envelopes, small patterned farbrics you like, a permanent marker, a temp fabric marker [e.g. magic pen], black chalkboard paint and a chalk pencil.

first you will have to trace the continents to create templates. cut the transparent envelopes open and  use them to cover the mainland you want to trace. fix it directly on the globe using masking tape [2]. that step is a bit tricky because of the curve of the globe, but you won’t have to be too nitpicking. i tried to forget about geographic and frontier political correctness… after all many of us wish for a kind of united world, don’t we? ;) so trace the continents with a permanent marker [1] and cut them out [3].

choose your fabrics for the different continents und transfer the templates to it using a magic pen [4]. then cut them out [5]. i couldn’t help choosing a rain drop like pattern for africa… it will stay a pipe dream i’m afraid…

if you’re using waterbased crafting glue or wood glue add a bit of water to dilute it. it will disperse easier [6].

make sure that your globe is all clean and dry to applicate the fabrics now. cover the left side of the fabric with a thin layer of glue using a brush [7]. then carefully place it on the matching part of the globe. add some more glue if needed and brush even [8]. the fabric is movable as long as the glue didn’t dry… push and pull a bit until you find the perfect position. wipe remained glue immediately. repeat this step with every single continent then let the whole thing dry over night. you will have sticky fingers and will need a bit of patience but it’s worth it.

here we go with the last step: the chalkboard stand. it has to be clean and dry for varnishing. please check the instructions on your chalkboard paint concerning different types of surfaces like plastic, metal or wood. it might be possible that some preparation is needed. mine was all plastic so i just had to roughen up the surface a bit using an abrasive sponge. i covered the holder to protect it from the paint, then i painted the stand brushing all over [9]. depending of the surface a second painting can be needed… i was lucky to have a good result with only one. let dry for at least 24 hours.

DANKE!!!
we’ve finished! now just decorate your personal globe in a nice place at your home and enjoy your work… or even pleasantly anticipate your next travel destination…! … SAFE TRAVELS!
i’m happy if you like my DIY-idea so much to give me your  vote… HERE. thank you so much!

eigentlich…

actually…
my inner lemming is not that twitchy when  it comes to blogger contest. but this time he had some convincing arguments up his sleeve, like… “hey, you had a BRIGITTE at home ever since you can remember and i don’t mean your aunty brigitte! you have been browsing through the BRIGITTE long before you were able to read a word! when you were a teen, you cut out pages to create inspiration collages. ok, today you would call it mood board or you would go over to pin something on pinterest. times have changed but BRIGITTE stayed in your life. i mean, hey! this time you simply HAVE TO join, mrs. pimpinella!

well… thanks to the stubborn lemming, i’m in… i’m in, when the BRIGITTE is searching for the most creative blogger 2012. each month the creative JURY (holly becker from decor8, steffi luxat from  Ohhh… mhhh… and DAWANDA-founder claudia helming) will nominate three bloggers to join a DIY-battle. the monthly winner will be chosen by user-voting then. the final winner will be elected at end of the year and will be part of a big DIY-report in the magazine. that really sounds good to me… but for the time being, i keep up olympic spirit… the most important thing is not to win but to take part! nevertheless, i’d really appreciate some CORDIALLY support. thank you!
