es gibt diese städte, bei denen man sich wünschte, man hätte ein paar tage mehr auf der reise für sie eingeplant. MÉRIDA in yucatán, mexiko ist so ein ort. die zeit dort verging wie im flug, wir wären gerne noch geblieben.

there are cities, where you you wish you had a few more days to stay than you planned for your travels. MÉRIDA in yucatán, mexico was a place like this for me. time went by too fast and we all wished we could have stayed a bit longer.

als ich nun meine fotos aus mérida durchsah, stellte ich wieder einmal fest, dass es einfach zu viele eindrücke sind, um sie in ein einziges posting zu quetschen. deshalb dachte ich, ich lasse es etwas gemütlicher angehen mit meiner liebe zu diesem ort.

browsing through my photographs from mérida i realized that there are far too many impressions to squeeze them into just one posting. so i thought, i better don’t rush and take it slow when it comes to talk about my love for this city.

die mexikaner halten ‘eh nichts von eile und eigentlich haben sie recht. wie oft hetzen wir hier durch unser leben und fühlen uns wie von “el diablo” gejagt… deshalb machen wir jetzt erst einmal siesta und zwar hier:

das café EL HOYO ist ein wunderbarer ort, um sich in mérida eine pause zu gönnen. das publikum ist jung, es gibt einen wunderbaren latte und kleine, leckere snacks, die alles andere als klein sind, sondern eher den teller sprengen. wer gerne ein foto seiner gigantischen nutella-waffeln nach hause schicken möchte, der hat hier free wifi. es gibt einen hübschen kleinen innenhof, um alles auch im freien zu genießen. besonders die fliesen hatten es mir angetan…

wart ihr schon einmal in mérida? was war euer lieblingsplätzchen?

the café EL HOYO is a lovely place to take a break in mérida. the guests are mostly young people. they have very good latte and small, yummy snacks that aren’t small at all but bursting your plate. if you want to send a picture of your huge nutella waffles home you can do so as they do offer free wifi. there is a little pretty patio in the back to enjoy your meal or drink outside. i especially loved the adorable tiles…

auf einen hanseaten ins café schmidt

TGIF…. das wochenende steht vor der tür. zeit zu entspannen! wie wäre es mit einem käffchen der zwei und was süßem? also begleitet mich doch auf einen hanseatischen kaffeeklatsch!

TGIF… weekend is here. time so relax, have a coffee or two and some sweetness! so join me for a hanseatic kaffeeklatsch!

direkt an der großen elbstraße in HAMBURG, zwischen unendlich vielen fischgeschäften und -lokalen, findet ihr das CAFÉ SCHMIDT.
ein wunderbar süßer ort, wenn ihr dem matjes und büsumer krabben der
umgebung überdrüssig seid. wie wäre es also mit einem typischen untypischen HANSEATEN mit einem BLAUEN anker drauf, statt des traditionellen ~~rot~~ rosa-weiß?

you can find the CAFÉ SCHMIDT directly at the große elbstraße in HAMBURG right between countless fish-shops and -restaurants. if you had enough of savoury matjes and büsumer shrimps you can feed your sweet tooth with some treats there. what about a typical untypical HANSEAT with a BLUE anchor on it, instead of the traditional ~~red~~ pink-white?

luzie, die absolute apfelkuchenexpertin in der familie, lobte übrigens ausdrücklich ihre apple tarte als besonders köstlich und emma kann “death by chocolate” empfehlen.

luzie, who is the expert for apple cakes in the family, complimented on the apple tart for being extraordinarily yummy and emma recommends “death by chocolate”.

ich bin ja eigentlich nicht so eine süßschnute und mit einem guten kaffee, einem latte oder cappucchino glücklich [dessen milchschaum-muster an dem nachmittag übigens die ein oder andere fantasie beflügelt hat ;) ]… den bekommt man hier auf jeden fall. und wie gesagt, um die ecke gibt es ja auch gleich fischbrötchen, wenn man’s lieber salzig mag!

ich wünsche euch ein schönes wochenende… ob mit milchschaum oder ohne!

i’m not a sweet tooth at all. i’m happy with a good coffee, latte or cappucchino that you can get here [and which can fire your imagination sometimes when looking at the pattern of the milk froth ;)]… and as i said, there are fish rolls available right around the corner, if you like it more salty!

auf einen glücksmoment…

ihr lieben. ich bin noch da. ihr auch. was dann wohl bedeutet, dass die wahre [und ich meine die wahre] weltuntergangsapokalypse heute tatsächlich nur in den supermärkten und in der postwarteschlange stattfindet! oh, du fröhlicher weihnachtseinkauf. falls ihr diesen heute auch nicht vermeiden könnt, dann gönnt euch zwischendurch vielleicht mal eine kleine pause irgendwo, wo es nett ist, und genießt einen moment in ruhe. ich werde heute mit dem kleinen fräulein irgendwo mittagessen gehen, wenn ich sie von der schule abgeholt habe. die weihnachtsferien sind endlich da, das will gefeiert werden. 9 klassenarbeiten und ein buch-referat in 4 wochen, auch sie hatte eine ganz schön anstrengende vorweihnachtszeit. höchste zeit, mal loszulassen und zu entspannen.

dear lovelies, im still here. you’re still there, too. that probably means that the real [i mean the real] apocalyptic end of the world takes place at the supermarkets and at the post offices today! happy christmas shopping! if you can’t avoid it, please make sure to take a break in a lovely place as well and just enjoy some moments during that busy day. i’m going to have lunch out at a bistro with my little one today, right after picking her up at school. christmas holidays are here… yay! she also had a busy advent time with 9 tests and one book presentation at school in only 4 weeks. it’s time to relax now!

falls ihr euch dieser tage noch zufällig in HANNOVER ins weihnachtsgetümmel stürzen wollt [oder müsst?] dann kann ich euch für so ein päuschen einen zauberhaften ort and herz legen. GLÜCKSMOMENT ist café und laden in einem. vielleicht findet ihr ja dort sogar beim latte macchiato oder was-auch-immer schlürfen [ich kann auch den mango-smoothie sehr empfehlen] noch das letzte weihnachtsgeschenk. wer weiß.

if you want [or must?] join the hustle and bustle these days and if you’re doing this in HANOVER, i really recommend to take a little rest at the adorable GLÜCKSMOMENT [which means “happy moment”] café & store. you can sit down, have a latte macchiato or whatever [the mango smoothie is also very good] and maybe you find your last christmas gift to buy. who knows.

das MEHL gibt es noch gar nicht so lange, aber es ist trotzdem schon kein hamburger restaurant-geheimtipp mehr. kein wunder, denn wer mal da war, der kommt wieder (manchmal gleich am übernächsten tag, so wie ich)… und der sagt’s auch gleich weiter. letzten donnerstag trafen wir uns hier zur großen BLOGGERinvasion…

although the MEHL (engl. flour) is quite new in the hamburg restaurant scene, it’s no insider tip anymore. no wonder, because if you’ve been there once you surely come back for more (like i did!) and you probably tell everyone. last thursday we came as a BLOGGERinvasion to hold our monthly meet-up there…

… zu lecker antipasti und den ungewöhnlichsten PIZZEN (pizzas, pizze, ganz wie ihr wollt), die man jemals auf dem teller hatte. oder hattet ihr schon mal rumpflaumen, chili-schokoladen-creme, entenbrust, grapefruitfilets, sepia-joghurt oder trüffelsalami… oder was auch immer ihr euch vorstellen könnt auf eurem pizzaboden? absolut wilde experimente sind hier auf der tages~~ordnung~~ karte und probieren geht über studieren. ich sag nur… yummy.

…. we had delicious antipasti and the most amazing experimental PIZZAS, we ever had on our plates. or did you ever try rum plums, chili chocolate cream, duck breast, filets of grapefruits, sepia yogurt or truffle salami… or whatever you may think of on your pizza? you can find the most bewildering combos on the menu…. and all i can say is… yummy!

… unser wochenende in INSTAGRAM. wir sind durch die COLONNADEN und um den GÄNSEMARKT gebummelt, haben tannenbaumschmuck geshoppt (ja, das NYC yellow cab musste natürlich sein!) und BOOM DRIVES CRAZY gelauscht! was für eine tolle band!

… our weekend in INSTAGRAM. we strolled though the COLONNADEN and around the GÄNSEMARKT, we shopped christmas tree ornaments (yes, i had to have the NYC yellow cab!) and listened to BOOM DRIVES CRAZY! what an awesome band!

wir sind im nebel an der ALSTER entlang spaziert, haben immerhin auf dem schild gesehen, was wir sehen würden, wenn man was hätte sehen können und wir haben die möwen kreischen gehört.

we took a walk at the ALSTER in the fog and saw on the sign what we’d see if we saw anything while the seagulls were screaming.

wir haben im FRISCHEPARADIES paradiesiche leckereien (ab sofort gibt es chili-fäden auf allem!) geshoppt und hatten hinterher ein astra mit fischbrötchen im SCHELLFISCHPOSTEN. nein, INA war leider nicht da.

we did some delicious shopping at the FRISCHEPARADIES (as of now we’ll have chili hair with everything!) and we stopped for some astra and fish in a roll at the SCHELLFISCHPOSTEN (a quirky original sailor pub).

danach auf ein paar schmalzkuchen und glühwein auf den REEPERBAHN weihnachtsmarkt SANTA PAULI. wir haben peinliche fragen der mädels nach den auslagen in so mancher verkaufsbude beantwortet und uns zu sechst in einen fotoautomat gequetscht. was für ein spaß.

we dropped by SANTA PAULI, the christmas market on the REEPERBAHN for some cruller and hot wine punch. we answered some quite awkward questions of the little one regarding the offered goods at some booths and we piled up with six people in a small photobooth! what a blast!

tiny pizzeria – big taste

pizza ist jawohl der klassiker am samstag abend, auch wir hatten pizza heute abend. doch unendlich viele richtig gute pizzas (pizze… pizzen… da scheiden sich ja die deutschen sprachgeister) hatten wir in diesem sommer in unserem ITALIENurlaub. begeistert waren wir zum beispiel von der kleinen und ältesten pizzeria der stadt LUCCA… der PIZZA da FELICE. habt ihr lust auf ein stück?

having a pizza is a kinda saturday night classic, isn’t it? we had a pizza for dinner, too. but we also had countless amazing good pizzas (pizze… what ever the correct plural in english might be) on our ITALY trip this summer. in LUCCA we had some at a small pizzeria called PIZZA da FELICE, which is the oldest pizza place in town. wanna share a piece with us?

ich mag so urige kleine lokale, die haben mit ihren stehtischen und den gekachelten wänden einen ganz eigenen charme und oft unglaublich gutes essen. wenn ihr also mal in LUCCA seid…

i really love tiny food places like this. they have such an own charme with their bistro tables and tiled walls. so don’t miss this one when you’re in LUCCA…

aber auch die schönsten eckchen hamburgs für eine ordentliche sightseeing-tour dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen… das treppenviertel, die speicherstadt, hafencity, planten un bloomen und so weiter und so fort bis hin zu meinem geliebten schanzenviertel, über das ihr hier in BLOG schön öfter lesen konntet.

ach ja… es gibt auch noch ein kapitel über CLUBS, BARS und LOUNGES fürs junge folk, das gern abends auf den kiez möchte. ;)

the sightseeing highlights of hamburg are surely not missing… like the treppenviertel, the speicherstadt, hafencity, planten un bloomen and many others. my beloved schanzenviertel is featured as well. you might have read about it here on my BLOG before.

and yes… there is another chapter telling you about the hottest CLUBS, BARS and LOUNGES in the neighborhood… might be very important for the younger folks among you. ;)

hier zu hause in meinem regal habe ich noch zwei weitere bücher stehen, die ich absolut empfehlen kann und die ich gern mal herauskrame, wenn lieber besuch kommt oder auch unsere hilfreichen urlaubs-housesitter… SCHÖNE GESCHÄFTE: 40 außergwöhnliche läden in hamburg und NUR IN HAMBURG – ein reiseführer zu sonderbaren orten, geheimen plätzen und versteckten sehenswürdigkeitenhamburg hat wirklich so unglaublich viel zu bieten. kein wunder, dass sie eine der schönsten städte der welt ist.

wenn ihr also das nächste mal in hamburg auf’n zwutsch gehen wollt und ihr wisst nicht wo, dann solltet ihr vielleicht in diese bücher mal reinluschern. ordentliches amüsemang ist dann auf jeden fall garantiert! ;)

a jam-packed saturday…

… den man zusammen mit freunden verbringt, startet man vielleicht mit einem bummel durch hamburg EPPENDORF. wenn man dann im lehmweg an ROB & STEPHEN’S LITTLE CAKE CO. vorbei kommt…

… you spend together with good friends, can be started with a stroll in hamburg EPPENDORF. if you are walking down the lehmweg and you pass ROB & STEPHEN’S LITTLE CAKE CO…

… dann muss man einfach dem köstlichen duft folgen und hineingehen…. und wenn es nur ist, um sich einen dieser grandiosen hafer-schoko-kekse zu holen.

… you just have to follow the sweet, delicious smell and drop in… even if it’s just to get one of these amazing oatmeal chocolate cookies.

…wenn man dann nach ein paar stops in schnuckligen boutiquen kaffedurst bekommt, kann man im EISCAFÉ DANTE in der sonne sitzen und an einem so speziellen samstag beobachten, wie sich die leute auf ein ganz besonderes event vorbeiten. naja, und natürlich ein spaghetti-eis nebenbei essen…

… folgst du dann den spuren der roten perücken nach SANKT PAULI, dann landest du an einem solchen samstag mittendrin…

… and if you are in the mood for some cup of coffee after doing some shopping at the lovely boutiques around there, you can take a rest at EISCAFÉ DANTE. on a special saturday like this you can watch the people prepare for some very peculiar event. well, and of course you can have a spaghetti icecream meanwhile…

… you might follow the track of the red wig right to SANKT PAULI and on a saturday like this you might end up just in the middle of…

… im SCHLAGERMOVE!!! dann feiert man ein bisschen mit, bis der regen kommt.

… the SCHLAGERMOVE!!! then you enjoy the party for a while until the rain comes.

auch wenn der hamburger an sich ziemlich regenresistent ist, flüchtest du dann lieber ins trockene…

even if the native “hamburger” is quite resistant to rain, you better flee into dry places…

… und bummelst zum beispiel eine runde durchs STILWERK, bevor du dich dann auf den weg in die SCHANZE machst.

… you do some window-shopping at the STILWERK for example, before you head for the SCHANZENVIERTEL.

dann überfällt dich natürlich der hunger und du lässt dir sushi im BOK MIKAWA schmecken…

then you really get hungry and you enjoy sushi and such at the BOK MIKAWA…

…. und weil heute irgendwie ein guter tag ist, kommt an deinem tisch auch noch der SÄNGER deiner hamburger lieblingsband FETTES BROT vorbei und du holst dir ganz mutig ein autogramm!

… and just because it’s an awesome day, the SINGER of your favorite hamburg band FETTES BROT passes by at your table and you’re going to get yourself an autograph!

wie? du hattest heute schon ein eis? aber noch keins von SCHMIDT, na dann…
ich hoffe, ihr hattet auch ein schönes wochenende, in hamburg oder wo auch immer.

kalt ist es geworden…

it grew cold…

… verdammt kalt. das hieß gestern… draußen schlottern und drinnen schweißausbrüche. trotzdem hatten wir eine tollen tag mit meiner schwester und ihrem liebingsmann…

… damn cold. so yesterday that was like shivering outside and breaking out in a sweat inside. but we had a great day with my sister and her hubby anyway…

sunday afternoon coffee

es war ein wenig still hier in den letzten tagen. nachdem ich seit weihnachten gekränkelt habe und kaum vor die tür
gekommen bin, und das wetter seit wochen ja auch nicht wirklich dazu
einlud, brauchte ich dieses wochenende ganz dringend mal wieder ein
bisschen mehr analoges leben. erst recht bei dem lang vermissten sonnenschein da draußen!

also waren wir dieses wochenende ganz viel unterwegs… die kamera war natürlich dabei. ich habe noch nicht alle fotos gesichtet… also lasst mich einfach zeitlich rückwärts anfangen. heute nachmittag gab es zum abschluss kaffee und kuchen bei HERR MAX…

it’s been a bit quiet here over the last few days. having felt sick since christmas i’ve been rarely leaving our home lately. the long period of very unpleasant weather wasn’t that inviting, too. so now i really needed some analogue life again!

we did a lot of fun stuff this weekend… and of course my camera was with me. i didn’t browse through all pictures yet, so let me start backwards in time. this afternoon we had some awesome coffee and cake at HERR MAX…

… luzie hatte rhabarbertorte mit baiser, stephan eine apfel tarte und ich einen saftigen brownie mit roten johannisbeeren… hmmmmm!

der besuch lohnt sich, wenn ihr mal in hamburg seid. ihr findet HERR MAX in der schanze in einem ehemaligen milchgeschäft von 1905 täglich von 10 – 19 uhr. wo genau seht ihr HIER.

… luzie had a rhubarb meringue cake, stephan an apple tarte and i had a luscious brownie with red currant. oh my!

if you visit hamburg, you should stop by, it’s worth it. you find HERR MAX at the schanzenviertel (a hamburg neighborhood) in an old former milk shop from 1905. it’s open daily 10 am to 7 pm. find the exact location HERE.

no USA vacation is complete without having a burger in an authentic diner. THE GRUBSTAKE is located in a rail car decommissioned in 1927. that is quite an authentic experience…

ziemlich ROT!

quite RED!

in letzter zeit bin ich ziemlich häufig über rote kuchen gestolpert, besonders bei meinen PINTEREST touren. RED VELVET CAKES scheinen ein echt trendiger renner unter den gebäcken zu sein, und man muss ja auch zugeben, sie sehen einfach umwerfend aus!

lately i stumbled upon RED VELVET CAKES quite often, especially when browsing through PINTEREST. red cakes and pastries seem to be the darling du jour when it comes to sweet treats. well, all this redness look adorable indeed!

war klar, dass ich die jetzt mal probieren musste, als sich die gelegenheit bot.

i surely had to give it a try lately.

bei SUSIE CAKES in san francisco (2109 chestnut street) fiel die auswahl ziemlich schwer. eigentlich hatte mich da so eine kokostorte angelacht, aber diesen RED VELVET hype wollte ich ja nun auch endlich mal auf den süßen zahn fühlen und griff zur farbe ROT.

when we walked by SUSIE CAKES in san francisco (2109 chestnut street) we kinda struggled with this huge variety of treats. the coconut cake really smiled at me but i wanted to see what this RED VELVET hype is all about. so i chose RED.

luzie griff zu supadupadoublechocolate-irgendwas… und der lieblingsmann griff zu gar nichts, wusste er doch zu gut, dass seine mädels diese riesenstücken torte doch nicht allein verdrücken würden könnten…

luzie took some supadupadoublechocolate-thingy… and hubby didn’t take anything. he knew his girls wouldn’t cope with this giant pie slices all by themselves anyway…

und? wie isser?

how is it, huh?

ich sags ganz ehrlich… schoko war göttlich. ich wette, kokos wäre es bestimmt auch gewesen. red velvet war vor allem ROT, naja und ziemlich dolle (wirklich dolle) süß. ein wirklicher augenschmaus, aber mir fehlte da geschmacklich doch irgendwie das spezielle… das nächste mal dann sehr gerne kokos, also! ;)

und ihr? habt ihr schon mal RED VELVET kuchen in welcher form auch immer gegessen oder selbst gebacken? wir findet ihr ihn? ich meine abgesehen von der hübschen farbe…

well, to be honest… the chocolate cake was divine. i bet the coconut cake would have been, too. red velvet was red, first and foremost, and it was really (really) sweet. it is such an eye candy but i am missing some kind of special flavour, maybe you know what i mean. so next time i’ll take a slice of coconut cake… ;)

did you ever try any kind of RED VELVET cake? or did you bake some yourself? how do you like it? i mean disregarding the pretty color…

übrigens… was ich ganz süß fand… an der tür gabs hundekekse!

san francisco ::: breakfast at THE GROVE

an tag 2 in SF (oh, du meine güte, ich bin tatsächlich erst bei tag ZWEI und ihr werdet noch einen haufen postings über euch ergehen lassen müssen ;) hatten wir mal wieder eine menge aufregendes vor. gestartet sind wir in der FILLMORE STREET und zum frühstück im THE GROVE gelandet. dort habe ich die besten FRENCH TOAST ever gegessen und luzie hatte einen wirklich gigantischen, frisch gepressen orangensaft mit einem ebenso gigantischen frühstücks-burrito, den papa natürlich aufessen musste.

on day 2 of our stay in SF (oh my gosh, yes it’s true, this is only day TWO of our trip… that means you’ll have to bear a whole lot of postings until i’m through ;) we needed a good brakfast to be prepared for adventures to come. we found THE GROVE at FILLMORE STREET and i had the most delish FRENCH TOAST ever. luzie had a giant freshly squeezed orange juice and a huuuuge breakfast burrito, which she couldn’t – no wonder – eat up...

die FILLMORE STREET ist übrigens eine wirklich nette ecke zum bummeln und shoppen mit hübschen boutiquen und netten cafés und sie ist ganz in der nähe von JAPANTOWN, wo wir unser hotel hatten. aber dazu später noch ein bisschen mehr…

the FILLMORE STREET is such a nice neighborhood to stroll around and go shopping. lot’s of lovely boutiques and cafés are located there and it’s next to JAPANTOWN where our hotel was located. gotta tell you about it later…

der chelsea market ist sowohl food court als auch shopping mall in einem ehemaligen bäckerei-fabrikkomplex, in dem vor fast hundert jahren übrigens der oreo keks erfunden wurde. ich mag das industrielle design im gebäude sehr… und auch die halloween-dekoration im oktober!

the chelsea market is a food court and shopping mall in a former bakery factory complex where the oreo cookie was invented almost 100 years ago. i really love that industrial design of the building… and the halloween decoration in october!
