POITOU CHARENTES begann zwar eigentlich in
LA ROCHELLE, doch ich möchte einfach mal mit tag 2 anfangen. denn ich habe mich auf diesem trip wirklich sehr verliebt… in die
ILE DE RÉ.
although i started my research trip to the french atlantic coast and it’s beautiful
POITOU CHARENTES region in
LA ROCHELLE, i’d like to begin with the 2nd day of my journey. just because i really fell in love with this place… with the
ILE DE RÉ.
das besondere an dieser kurzreise war für mich sicherlich, dass ich zum ersten mal ganz allein unterwegs war. normalerweise reise ich ja mit meiner familie, mit freunden oder zumindest mit anderen bloggern zusammen. dieses mal waren es nur me, myself & i. es gab viele momente, da fand ich es komisch und auch ein bisschen schade, meine eindrücke und meine begeisterung nicht direkt mit lieben menschen teilen zu können [in diesen
momenten liebte ich mein
INSTAGRAM und das teilen dort ganz besonders!]. aber es gab auch momente, wo ich es sehr genossen habe, dass ich ein bisschen nach meinem eigenen rhythmus unterwegs sein konnte. dass niemand an der nächten straßenecke schon auf mich wartete, während ich mich mal wieder im fotografieren verlor [macht euch also auf eine bilderflut gefasst]. diese reise war eine sehr persönliche erfahrung für mich.
something that made this trip very special for me was the fact that it was the very first time that i travelled all alone. usually i’m with my family, with friends or at least with other bloggers, but this time it was just me, myself & i. there were moments when i missed someone to share my impessions and enthusiasm with [that were the
moments when i loved my
INSTAGRAM even more!]. but there were also moments when i enjoyed it a lot to flow with my very own rhythm. being able to take my own time for taking pictures and not having to hurry, because someone was waiting for me at the next corner [so you better prepare for a flood of images today]. this voyage was quite a personal experience for me.
ich mietete also an einem samstagmorgen vor zwei wochen ein nettes
kleines, sehr blaues auto und machte mich von la rochelle aus auf den weg auf die hübsche atlanik-insel ile de ré. über eine maut-brücke gelangt man von der hafenstadt aus in 10 minuten auf die insel. man kann sie auch mit dem fahrrad in ca. einer halben stunde überqueren [ich meine, dann ist die überfahrt frei]. dort angekommen machte sich bei mir gleich maritimstes urlaubsfeeling breit.
so two weeks ago on a saturday morning i rented a
nice little, very blue car in la rochelle to start off to the pretty atlantic island ile de ré. you can reach it in 10 minutes by car by crossing a toll bridge. you can also drive by bike within 30 minutes [i think, the traverse for cyclists is free]. once i arrived some very maritime holiday feeling took hold of me.
ich war kaum ein paar kilometer auf der insel gefahren, da musste ich in RIVEDOUX PLAGE anhalten, um einen ersten kleinen strandspaziergang zu machen und frische seeluft zu schnuppern. kaum ein paar schritte gegangen, fand ich schon die erste austern-schale! [eine kleine nic-fährt-einen-mietwagen anekdote nebenbei…ich hatte geparkt und wollte wie üblich den zündschlüssel abziehen, aber er bewegte sich keinen nanometer. ich ruckelte, aber nichts tat sich. der schlüssel steckte fest. ich wollte mich nicht gleich als komplette auto-idiotin outen und bei der vermietung anrufen, also fragte ich erst einmal herrn P. am telefon. er wusste es auch nicht – eine tatsache, die mich ehrlich gesagt dann doch enorm beruhigte. aber er googelte es schnell. man musste den schlüssel erst hineindrücken und konnte ihn dann rausziehen. toller, irgendwie unnötiger trick, wenn ihr mich fragt. ;)]
i had to take a first stop a few kilometers from the bridge at
RIVEDOUX PLAGE to have a little walk at the beach and take a deep breath and snuffle lovely marine air. after a few steps at the beach i already found my first oyster shell! [a little nic-is-driving-a-rental-car anecdote along the way… when i parked the car i tried to unplug the ignition key as usual. no way. it didn’t move a nanometer. i didn’t want to call the car rental for help to reveal myself as a car driver dork or something, so i called mr. P. at home. he didn’t know an instant solution as well – a fact that eased me a lot – and quickly googled the answer. i had to push the key first and then pull it out. amazing but a somehow unneeded trick, if you ask me. ;)]
gleich neben dem strand war markt. ich denke, ich erwähnte schon unzählige viele male, dass ich märkte liebe, oder? ich finde so spannend, was es dort alles zu entdecken gibt. diese schrumpeligen dinger zum beispiel. ich musste erst einmal in einem wörterbuch nachsehen, um herauszufinden, was das für ein [leider etwas unattraktives] gemüse ist… es sind [runkel?]rüben. nun runkelig passt ja irgendwie. ich fragte mich, wie die wohl schmecken?
right beside the beach there was a local market. didn’t i tell you countless many times, that i really love local markets? i enjoy exploring all the booths and discovering food i don’t know, like these [slightly unattractive] vegetables on the left for example. i had to check my dictionary to find out what this was… it said these are some kind of [sugar?] beet. i wondered what they taste like.
fangfrischen fisch und meeresfrüchte gab es natürlich in einer beeindruckenden auswahl. darunter lebende aale in einem netz, die schlängelten sich da so hin und her. nee, aale sind nicht meins – auch hierzulande nicht. aber die kleinen roulädchen [
PAUPIETTE] sahen ser ansprechend aus.
nach der kurzen, aber sehr netten stippvisite [bis auf das zündschlüssel-intermezzo], fuhr ich weiter zu meinem eigetlichen zielort, nach
SAINT MARTIN DE RÉ, dem hauptort der insel.
of course they had an amazing variety of freshly caught fish. amongst others some living eels in a net. well, honestly eels are not my cup of tea… not here at home nor somwhere else in the world. but i thought that these
PAUPIETTEs looked quite delicious.
after this lovely flying visit [except the car key part] i got back to my car and drove on to the place i was supposed to stay at
SAINT MARTIN DE RÉ, which is the principal town of the island.
ich checkte im hotel
LE GALION ein… sehr nettes, maritimes flair, ganz zentrale lage [kurz um die ecke liegt gleich der hafen] und einen leuchtturm direkt vor der tür! sehr schön. das hotel bietet fahrräder zur ausleihe an, also besorgte ich mir eins, um die insel zu erkunden. das fahrrad ist überhaupt das verkehrsmittel der wahl auf der insel. sie ist 30 km lang und 5 km breit und bietet rund 100 km radwege! fahrrad-verleihe sah ich fast an jeder straßenecke, auch für kleinkindräder und sogar für fahrradanhänger für die allerkleinsten.
i check in the hotel
LE GALION… a lovely, maritime place at central location [the habour is just a few steps around the corner] and a lovely view onto a lighthouse just in front of the door. beautiful. they do provide bicycles to borrow there and i got one for myself to explore the island. bicycles are the vehicle of choice on this island. it is 30 km long and only 5 km in width and it has around 100km of bikeways! i saw bike rentals everywhere, where they offer also bikes for children and even bike railers for the littlest.
das wetter meinte es wieder erwarten dann doch ganz gut mit mir. bis auf ein paar kurze momente, in denen
ich froh war, meinen regenmantel anzuhaben, zeigte sich der himmel in blau weiß. leider war es, wie auch bei uns zuhause, viel zu kühl für die jahreszeit. aber das tat meiner guten laune keinen abbruch und den anderen urlaubern auch nicht, die zum teil schon ganz wagemutig in kurzen hosen herumliefen. die umkleide-häuschen standen allerdings noch nicht am strand. so wagemutig, baden zu gehen, wäre dann wohl doch noch kaum jemand gewesen.
against all expectations the weather meant it well with me. there were only very few moments when i was really
glad to have my raincoat with me. the sky was mostly blue and white. it was too chilly for the season, but that really didn’t cloud my mood all nor the mood of the other vacationers. many of them were daringly wearing shorts. though the little clothes changing booths didn’t stand at the beach yet. i think it would have been really daring to go swimming at these temperatures.
ich fuhr mit meinem rad am wasser entlang und auch durch die kleinen kopfstein-gepflasterten gassen des ortes. überall blühte es und die bunten blumen sprießten aus jeder mauerritze. eine wohltat für mein immer noch wintergeplagtes gemüt.
i was biking along the lovely waterfront and through the small cobblestone paved alleys of the town. it was blooming verywhere and coloful flowers sprouted out of every chink in the walls. it was such a delight for my still winter-weary soul.
irgendwann kam ich an der wehrkirche, dem
CLOCHER de SAINT MARTIN DE RÉ vorbei und entdeckte, dass man den turm besteigen konnte. für niedliche 1,50 euro konnte man die wirklich engen 177 stufen zur aussichtsplattform erklimmen. der treppenaufgang ist wirlich nichts für klaustrophobiker. es ist so eng, dass es im oberen abschnitt eine ampel braucht, die regelt, in welche richtung man sie gerade besteigen darf. [ich habe übrigens fast einen herzinfarkt vor schreck erlitten, als beim abstieg direkt neben mir die kirchglocke anfing zu schlagen!]. dafür ist die aussicht über die dächer des hübschen städtchens dann atemberaubend!

360 pano camera geschossen. ein sehr nettes gadget für besondere fotos auf reisen!
i stopped at the fortfield church, the
CLOCHER de SAINT MARTIN DE RÉ and found out that you can climb up the tower. for wee 1,50 euros you get access to the very narrow staircase which is nothing for claustrophobic people. at the upper part it’s so narrow that they have to handle the staircase traffic with a traffic light. [by the way… i almost got a heart attack and scared stiff when the church bell was pulled just when i descended the stairs right beside it!]. but once you arrive at the top of the look-out you are rewarded with a breathtaking view over the roofs of the pretty town!

360 pano camera. it’s such a nice gadget for special travel photography.]
irgendwann hatte ich mittagshunger und in den hafen-restaurants direkt am wasser lachten mich die schwarzen, altmodischen emaille-töpfe, voll mit miesmuscheln in diversen saucen an. so einen wollte ich! aber ich war nicht die einzige, und alle tische waren voll besetzt, also schlenderte ich noch eine weile herum, um mir die zeit zu vertreiben. mein mittagessen sollte dann doch ein anderes werden…
at some point around lunchtime i got very hungry. at the waterfront restaurants they had some yummy looking, old-fashioned, black enamel cooking pots filled with blue mussels in various sauces. i really wanted a pot like that, but i wasn’t the only one. the tables were all taken and so i strolled the harbour area to pass some time. and somehow my lunch was supposed to be another one…
ich spazierte durch einen torbogen auf einen hof, wo sich auch das winzig kleine kino befand und entdekte ein kleines austern bistro…
LE TOUT DU CRU.
ich glaube, ich war teenager als ich einmal eine auster versuchte und zugegebenermaßen damals fand, dass sie irgendwie wie schnupfen anmutet. aber als ich jetzt zwei damen vor der netten austern-bar so genüsslich ihre muscheln schlürfen sah, fuchste es mich doch noch einmal. schließlich verändert sich der geschmack im laufe der jahre und vielleicht war die auster damals ja auch einfach nicht frisch genug. wenn austern irgendwo wirklich frisch sind, dann ja schließlich hier, wo sie gezüchtet werden! also frisch gewagt… der freundliche bistro-besitzer empfahl mir erst mal kleine exmplare [das war auch mein erster gedanke] und brachte mir ahnungslosen, passionierten bier-trinkerin einen passenden wein dazu. dann ließ er mich lächelnd allein mit den tieren.
was soll ich sagen? sie waren tatsächlich köstlich… die erste auster damals, die zählte gar nicht mehr! ich freute mich über diese erfahrung, über mich selbst, über diese nette bar mit der charmanten bedienung und über die rechnung auch… 10 euro. ein witz für so etwas schönes!
i walked through an archway to enter a courtyard where the very small cinema was located and came across an adorable oyster bistro…
LE TOUT DU CRU.
i think i was a teeanger when i tried the first and only oyster in my life until them. i must admit, i remembered it kinda snort like. but now that i saw some ladies sitting in front of this lovely oyster bar, slurping their mussels with pleasure, i was ready to give these guys another try. at least taste is changing as we’re getting older and this is definitely the place where you can get some really fresh oysters. so nothing ventured, nothing gained! the owner of the bistro was quite charming. he suggested to start with small ones [i thought exactly the same] and also a matching vine [for me clueless, passionate beer-drinker]. then he left me alone with these animals on the plate.
what can i tell you? they were delicious… that first oyster i had many years ago didn’t count anymore! i was so pleased about this experience, about myself, about this adorable bar and it’s charming owner and about the bill as well… it was 10 euros. ridiculously low for something so lovely!
ganz beseelt machte ich mich wieder auf den weg, die stadt weiter zu erkunden. ich fand so viele antik und vintage geschäfte. ich wünschte, ich wäre nicht mit dem flieger nach frankreich gekommen, sondern mit einem auto mit einem fetten anhänger. dann wären auf jeden fall die farbbekleckerten [tolix?] metallstühle im ersten foto mit nach hause gekommen und die landkarten… natürlich!
then i went to explore the town even more. i found so many antique and vintage stores. i wished i didn’t travel to france by plane but by car. by car with a huge trailer, so i would have been able to take the paint-spotted [tolix?] metal chairs in the first picture with me. and the maps… of course!
hier zwischen den hellen häusern, mit den hübschen bunten, teils von der seeluft ausgeblichenen, fensterläden herumzuschlendern fand ich wunderbar. die leute zu beobachten… sich von der meeresbrise durchpusten zu lassen… es war so ein schöner tag!
i enjoyed strolling the streets, looking at the pale white houses with their pretty colored window shutters, sometimes bleached by the marine air. i loved watching the people and let myself blown by the seabreeze… i had a great day!
seeluft macht hungrig! und weil das so ist, holte ich mir einen snack am hafen… churros [eigentlich so ziemlich un-französisch und eher spanisch, aber ist ja auch egal] mit einer besonderen delikatesse: caramel-sauce mit
FLEUR DE SEL. das ganz besondere, hochwertige meersalz hat dieser insel übrigens ihren reichtum beschert. im norden. im örtchen LOIX im ecomusee du marais salant kann man sich heute noch ansehen, wie die salzbauern an ihr weißes gold gelangen. leider fehlte mir die zeit, diesen ort zu besuchen.
sea air makes you hungry! so i had to stop for a little snack at the harbour… churros [which are quite un-french but spanish, but never mind] with a delicacy: caramel sauce with
FLEUR DE SEL. it’s wealth owes this island to the sea salt. in the village of LOIX at the ecomusee du marais salant you can still see how the salt farmers harvest their white gold. such a pity that i hadn’t got enough time to visit that place, too.
bensimon schuhe! design-klassiker aus den 80ern und wieder total in. wer muss bei dem anblick nicht an sophie marceau und la boum denken… irendwie? mich schon. ich hätte sehr gerne welche für das kleine fräulein mitgebracht, aber ich fürchte, für ihren extrem schmalen fuß wären die leider nichts gewesen. seufz.
bensimon shoes! a design classic fron the 80s and so trendy again. don’t they remember you of sophie marceau in the la boum movie… somehow? i’d loved to bring some for my little fräulein, but they probably wouldn’t have fit her very slim and slender feet. sigh.
es ist ja ein offenes geheimnis, dass ich eine echte schwäche für esel habe [
und das kleine fräulein auch]. ihr könnt euch also vorstellen, wie verknallt ich in diese süßen kerle war. die L’ANES EN CULOTTE [die esel in hosen] haben früher díe salz-ernte und dergleichen auf der insel transportiert. um sie vor lästigem ungeziefer zu schützen, steckte man sie in hosen. heute tragen sie höchstens mal ein paar kichernde kinder durch die gegend und sind wahrlich das süßeste maskottchen, das ich je gesehen habe.
it’s an open secret that i have a soft spot for donkeys [
and the little fräulein as well]. so maybe you can imagine how smitten i was by these guys. the L’ANES EN CULOTTE [the donkeys in pants]. in former times the donkeys transported the salt and other kinds of goods around the island. they were put on the pants to save them from biting insects. today they are only carrying giggling children on their back. i’ve never ever seen a cuter mascot for sure.
nach einem wirklich wundervollen tag am meer, war ich dann fast zu müde, um mein abendessen im restaurant LE SERGHI, gleich um die ecke von meinem hotel, zu genießen. ein wunder, dass ich nicht schlafend mit dem kopf auf den teller gefallen bin. das wäre schade gewesen, denn das essen war wirklich lecker. man könnte dies wohl ein sehr spezielles “surf & turf”… garnelen mit blutwurst. ja blutwurst. irdendwie verfolgt die mich in letzter zeit. sogar bis nach frankreich! übrigens… ich fiel dann um eine völlig unfranzösische zeit ins bett… um 9 uhr. bonne nuit, ile de ré. je t’aime!
after a really wonderful day in the marine air, i was almost too tired to enjoy my delicious dinner at the restaurant LE SERGHI just around the corner of my hotel. i was so tired, that it was remarkable that i manage not to hit the plate with my sleepy head. wondering what i had? i think you could call this a very special kind of “surf & turf”… prawns with black pudding. yes, black pudding! somehow it seems to be after me lately. even in france! by the way… i fell into my pillows at quite an un-french time… at 9 pm. bonne nuit, ile de ré. je t’aime!

hamburg hat wirklich so unglaublich viel zu bieten. kein wunder, dass sie eine der schönsten städte der welt ist.
