travel innsbruck | luzia pimpinella

when i think of TYROL,
i do not only think of impressing mountains and beautiful landscapes. i also think of food… of course! what else should i think of? kasspatzen,
kaiserschmarrn, kaspress- and germknödel, all these glorious delicacies that cause love handles almost immediately. it is so astonishing, that you can still find skinny tyrolians everywhere. how do they do this? because calories are lurking around every corner. today i’m going to take you to two amazing delicious places in the historic center of  INNSBRUCK, where you can indulge yourself with tyrolian specialities.

the café & konditorei MUNDING
{“konditorei” means confectionery or pastry shop} is a historic institution. it’s tyrols oldest confectionery and established in 1803, still owned by the same family in the 6th generation. one of the smart munding family members even invented the worlds first dough kneading machine! as we enter the café mr. P. says: “oh! what a pretty 50 charme!”. he didn’t come really close though, because the amazing interior is originally from 1932. it’s very old-fashioned and charming, right! i’m instantly smitten by this interior design. as we sit down we recognize the huge chrome coffee machine in front of us. another beautiful relict from 1961.

while i’m studying the coffee menue, i wonder if a kaffeeklatsch usually is a {coffee} cocktail in disguise here… tiroler kaffee {with fruit brandy and whipped cream topping}, café coretto {with grappa and and whipped cream topping},
wiener mocca g’spritzt {espresso with brandy}, kaiser melange {espresso with honey, also brandy and whipped cream topping},
mazagran {chilled coffee with rum}, prugne {coffee with plum schnaps and whipped cream topping}, husaren kaffee {coffee with vodka, whipped cream topping and chocolate splits}… the list seems endless. so many toppings, so much schnaps. i ordered myself a white coffee with non-alcoholic caramel syrup and a huge slice of raspberry merigue pie. both is devine! next to me luzie nibbles her homemade raspberry macarons and mr. P is enjoying his apple pie. if the quirky interior can’t convince you, the delicious pastry and coffee should at least.

besides all the yumminess you can also find real old-fashion wackiness here… like the old matchbox automat at the stairway {sorry, got no picture of that because poor lighting conditions} and the ladies bathroom! nothing has changes there for ages. that means pale pink tiles on the walls and turquoise tiles on the floor. what a design! it is so quirky that you might go for a second pee and take your camera along! ;)

you can find another amazing place at the stiftgasse in the historic center…the s’SPECKLADELE. with its 5,77qm it’s the smallest shop in innsbruck {even of tyrol i guess}. you can get tyrolian speck, smoked sausages, alp cheese and farmhouse bread there and if you enter the room with two people it’s kind of overcrowded. but as well as the room is pretty filled, your nose is filled, too, with the delish flavor of smoked speck.

we leave this tiny store with a bag ful of tyrolian specialities for our friends and family at home and the little fräulein is nibbling again. this time it is a kaminwurzn {a smoked sausage}, although she had all those raspberry macarons before. well, tyrol is heaven for small and big gourmets.
