mal eben schnell ins jahr 1627 reisen… dazu braucht man keine zeitmaschine! wenn man, wie wir, auf seinem NEUENGLAND roadtrip auf dem weg von CAPE COD nach BOSTON an der PLIMOTH PLANTATION stoppt, steht man plötzlich shakespeare-englisch sprechenden pilgervätern und ihren familien, sowie auch wampanoag-indianern gegenüber und darf für eine weile in eine lang vergangene zeit eintauchen. ich nehme euch heute mit auf unsere kleine zeitreise aus dem vorletzten sommer…
to travel back in time to 1627, you actually don’t need a time machine! when we were on our NEW ENGLAND roadtrip making our way from CAPE COD to BOSTON, we stopped at the PLIMOTH PLANTATION and jumped right into a piece of living american history. we met the pilgrim fathers and their families, as well as the native wampanoag people. today i’m going to take you on a little journey back in time…
wir waren auf dem weg von PROVINCETOWN, wo wir ein paar großartige tage am meer verbracht hatten, nach BOSTON. boston sollte der letzte punkt unseres roadtrips sein und es war gerade eine heftige hitzewelle im anmarsch. als ich einige monate zuvor hier im blog über unsere REISEPLANUNG für diesen urlaub geschrieben hatte, war das freiluftmuseum plimoth plantation einer eurer kostbaren tipps in den kommentaren gewesen {dankeschön nochmal dafür!}. trotz der 35°C im schatten wollten wir uns diesen geschichtsträchtigen ort nicht entgehen lassen. so hattte doch hier vor vielen hundert jahren die besiedlung amerikas durch die europäer begonnen, nachdem die ersten englischen siedler mit der MAYFLOWER und vielen hoffnungen im gepäck an der küste cape cods angelandet waren. gern hätten wir an diesem tag auch den originalgetreuen nachbau des imposanten segelschiffs erkundet, das im hafen von plymouth vor anker liegt, aber die mayflower II befand sich leider gerade für reparaturarbeiten auf dem trockendock.
we had left PROVINCETOWN, where we spent a few gorgeous beach days, heading off to BOSTON. a huge heat wave was coming up that day and boston was supposed to be the last destination on our roadtrip. when i blogged about our TRAVEL PLANNING for this vacation a few month before the trip, this outdoor living history exhibit plimoth plantation had been one of your reader’s tips in the comments {thanks again for that!} so we didn’t want to miss this out, despite the summer heat! after all it is the place were the first settlers from europe found their home in the new world after they landed the cape cod shore on board the MAYFLOWER hundreds of years ago. too bad that we didn’t get the chance to visit the full-scale reproduction mayflower II as it was on dry dock for some repairs by that time.
das museumdorf ist ein detailgetreuer nachbau einer englischen siedlung aus dem 17. jahrhundert. überall begegnet man “dorfbewohnern” in für diese zeit typischer kleidung und bei ihrer arbeit. an diesem tag hatten die darsteller wirklich mein tiefstes mitgefühl, denn in ihren vielen schichten an kleidung {die frauen trugen etliche unterröcke!} muss die flimmernde hitze kaum zu ertragen gewesen sein!
the outdor museum is village is re-creation of the small village community of english settlers in the 17th century. you can meet the village “residents” all over the place, wearing true to original clothing and doing the things they did in 1627. on that special day i really pitied the role players as they must have suffered a lot from the high temperatures in their many layers of clothes {the women wore serveral skirts and underskirts!}.
das dorf ist ein wirklich lebendes museum. alle gebäude darf man betreten, erkunden und die inneneinrichtung bestaunen. nicht selten trafen wir dann man im haus auf menschen bei ihren häuslichen tätigkeiten… bei handarbeiten, beim zubereiten von essen oder beim gemeinsamen mahl. manche szenen kamen mir vor wie das lebende abbild eines altertümlichen gemäldes! fast immer kamen wir mit den bewohnern ins gespräch. sie erzählten uns von ihrem leben, wie es im jahr 1627 nun einmal war. da die kommunikation im damals üblichen shakespeare-englisch stattfand, gestaltete sie sich teilweise etwas schwieriger, aber das war eben teil des interaktiven geschichtserlebnisses.
the village is a living museum. every house was open for us to explore. sometimes we met the village people indoors doing their chores, peparing food or even having their meal. some of the scenes seemed like ancient canvas paintings to me! we always got in conversation with the people which was pretty exciting as the settlers speak in shakespeare-english. sometimes it was hard for us to understand but it was fun and part of the interactive historical experience.
neben der englischen siedlung, ist auch ein WAMPANOAG-dorf teil des freilichtmuseums plimoth plantation. alle menschen, die man dort trifft, sind tatsächlich wampanoag oder stammen von anderen stämmen amerikanischer ureinwohner ab. auch sie bringen brachten uns im direkten kontakt das leben, das sie im 17. jahrhundert führten, und ihre kultur nah. sie erzählten uns, wie damals ihr familienleben aussah, wie sie jagden, mais anbauten und essen zubereiteten und erklärten uns, wie sie aus einem einzigen baumstamm in landwieriger handarbeit ein einbaum-boot durch ausbrennen herstellten. neugierige fragen waren jederzeit erwünscht!
next to the english village, there is another area of the outdoor exhibit. the WAMPANOAG homesite is also part of the plimoth plantation showing the life of the native american tribe in the 17th century. unlike the english people in the village, the people you can meet there are real wampanoags or other natives taking pride in the heritage of their culture and history. they told us about their everyday life back in those times, about their family living, hunting, corn farming, cooking an crafting. you can watch how they create dugout canoes from a tree log by burning it. curious questions are always appreciated here!
dieses gestell da mitten im maisfeld ist übrigens ein klettergerüst für die kinder! die wampanoag ließen ihre kinder dort spielen und toben, was praktischerweise und ganz nebenbei hungrige tiere aus dem feld fernhielt, die es auf den mais abgesehen hatten. sehr plietsch!
see the rack in the middle of the corn field? it’s a climbing gym for the children! the wampanoag people let their kids play there in the corn field and casually at the same time the playing crowd kept away hungry animals looking for corn. totally smart!
wir fanden die paar stunden, die wir dort verbrachten, enorm spannend. die plimoth plantation ist ein toller ort, um in ein lebendiges stück amerikanischer geschichte abzutauchen. falls es euch auf einer reise mal in diese ecke neuenglands verschlägt, können wir einen besuch des museumsdorfs absolut ampfehlen… und bestimmt habt ihr dann auch mehr glück mit der besichtigung der mayflower II als wir!

we really enjoyed the fascinating time we spent at the plimoth plantation peeping into the year of 1627. it’s an awesome place to experience a piece of american history. we can really recommend a visit of the outdoor museum, if you should ever come by travelling new england… and maybe you’re more lucky than we were seeing the mayflower II, too!
