travel neuengland | plimoth plantation – einmal zurück ins jahr 1627, bitte!

travel USA | neuengland roadtrip - freiluftmuseum plimoth plantation | fiftytwofreckles.com aka luziapimpinella

to travel back in time to 1627, you actually don’t need a time machine! when we were on our NEW ENGLAND roadtrip making our way from CAPE COD to BOSTON, we stopped at the PLIMOTH PLANTATION and jumped right into a piece of living american history. we met the pilgrim fathers and their families, as well as the native wampanoag people. today i’m going to take you on a little journey back in time…

we had left PROVINCETOWN, where we spent a few gorgeous beach days, heading off to BOSTON. a huge heat wave was coming up that day and boston was supposed to be the last destination on our roadtrip. when i blogged about our TRAVEL PLANNING for this vacation a few month before the trip, this outdoor living history exhibit plimoth plantation had been one of your reader’s tips in the comments {thanks again for that!} so we didn’t want to miss this out, despite the summer heat! after all it is the place were the first settlers from europe found their home in the new world after they landed the cape cod shore on board the MAYFLOWER hundreds of years ago. too bad that we didn’t get the chance to visit the full-scale reproduction mayflower II as it was on dry dock for some repairs by that time.

the outdor museum is village is re-creation of the small village community of english settlers in the 17th century. you can meet the village “residents” all over the place, wearing true to original clothing and doing the things they did in 1627. on that special day i really pitied the role players as they must have suffered a lot from the high temperatures in their many layers of clothes {the women wore serveral skirts and underskirts!}.

the village is a living museum. every house was open for us to explore. sometimes we met the village people indoors doing their chores, peparing food or even having their meal. some of the scenes seemed like ancient canvas paintings to me! we always got in conversation with the people which was pretty exciting as the settlers speak in shakespeare-english. sometimes it was hard for us to understand but it was fun and part of the interactive historical experience.

next to the english village, there is another area of the outdoor exhibit. the WAMPANOAG homesite is also part of the plimoth plantation showing the life of the native american tribe in the 17th century. unlike the english people in the village, the people you can meet there are real wampanoags or other natives taking pride in the heritage of their culture and history. they told us about their everyday life back in those times, about their family living, hunting, corn farming, cooking an crafting. you can watch how they create dugout canoes from a tree log by burning it. curious questions are always appreciated here!

see the rack in the middle of the corn field? it’s a climbing gym for the children! the wampanoag people let their kids play there in the corn field and casually at the same time the playing crowd kept away hungry animals looking for corn. totally smart!

we really enjoyed the fascinating time we spent at the plimoth plantation peeping into the year of 1627. it’s an awesome place to experience a piece of american history. we can really recommend a visit of the outdoor museum, if you should ever come by travelling new england… and maybe you’re more lucky than we were seeing the mayflower II, too!

talking about SUMMER BEST OFs … what about some real cool PHOTO-APPs for the ultimate sommer-look of your SMARTPHONE PICTURES? today i’d like to share my currently favorite apps for iPHONE & co with you. maybe you like one of these for your vacation snapshots, too!?
luzia pimpinella | reisefotografie | sommer foto apps - pomelo

kategorien… film, pola, lomo, vintage

POMELO… already sounds like summer, huh? this is the newest among the photo apps on my phone and it’s for free {no in-app buys involved so far}. unfortunately there’s is version for android yet. very sad. POMELO provides over 70 stylish photo filters sorted in 5categories … film, pola, lomo, vintage
und  B&W. more packages can be downloaded in-app for free and even more filters are announced. you can easily adjust the strength of the filters. the app itself is clearly arranged and has a lovely design. of course basic editing tool like crop, rotate, vignette, tilt-shift ect. aren’t missing. moreover the POMELO app {download-link} provides live filters with the camera. instant sharing on facebock,
twitter and instagram included. check out the hashtag #pomelocamera to browse through samples of other INSTAGRAM users if o like. above you can see editings from moi! i especially love the filter categories FILM & LOMO mostly because of it’s vivid colors. but i also love the faded 70s-PHOTO-LOOK. just a few of the countless possibilities… which  editing do you like the most?

VINTIQUE… the name says it all. this one is for all fans of VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHY. faded colors, antique textures and light leaks gives the distictive vintage look of pics edited with the VINTIQUE app
{download link}. unfortunately it is not for free and also in-app buys are involved. but if you get yourself the whole package there are many, many editing possibilities at your hands. besides the basic tools like brightness, saturation contrast, temperature and so on} it provides over 140 filters and additional vignettes and textures for maximum retro editing fun. messages can be added to the pictures, but i personally think the variety of fonts is a little poor. there are also plus packs of frames, which i personally don’t need, as i don’t like frames that much. but anyhow. VINTIQUE provides instant sharing on facebook, twitter and instagram of course. i spotted an APP with the same name for android
{download-link}, i don’t think though that it’s the same product. i used VINTIQUE for iOS to play around with a shot of a pretty bike i took at MARTHA’S VINEYARD last summer and let it age classily… which style is your favorite here?

ROOKIE… you gotta love it! i love the selection of STICKERS & BADGES of die app. maybe you already know the RHONNA DESIGNS photo-app that i shared here on the blog last year. if you love that one, you will surely have a crush on ROOKIE, too!  it keeps the focus on the PHOTO FILTERS a little bit more, which i like. the sologan “CAPTURE YOUR SENTIMENTS” says a lot about the variety of filters. there are very moody and stylish looks involved… if you like to have a closer look on the ROOKIE app {download link – basic app for free, but  in-ap buys involved!} live, please check out this VIDEO! apropos live… ROOKIE also provides
live-filters for the cam. in the editing mode there are more than 100 filters, over 100 fonts and more than 260 badges and sticker to choose from. creativity has no limit! professional photo editing tools make the whole thing complete. contrast, brightness, saturation, lights & shadows, color temperature, double exposure, clarity & sharpness and many more options are included. a real A+ from me for this app! {i found an ANDROID app with the same name HERE, but again, i’m don’t think it’s really the same product}.and of course i did a few editings to show you some examples: the fräulein on her way to the beach, shot on our last summer vacation in NEW ENGLAND. in this palette i can hardly decide for a favorite… what di you think??

travel | frühstück & shopping in rockport, MA

i told you before how much i fell i love with that new england place called ROCKPORT. so after a KAYAK-TOUR, a stroll over BEARSKIN NECK and a sweet tooth stop at the FUDGERY let me take you for a yummy breaktfast and for some gorgeous shopping.
luzia pimpinella | travel | rockport red skiff seafood & grillie restaurant

the owner of the lovely B&B we stayed in had an own partner breakfast place. but when we came into town in the morning, we noticed a line of people in front of the RED SKIFF seafood & grille. we asked some of the people if they were rockport residents or tourists and then we joined the queue. we always know that it must be a good place if natives stand i line for some eating!

i’m definitely not a croissant and jam girl. i love myself some hearty and solid brakfast. give me scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages and fried potatoes and i’m happy. you got french toast and maple syrup as well? perfect! you know i love that STUFF!! the fräulein likes herself some blueberry pancakes. and of course they had all that at this place! so we were all happy. sometimes i get to think, what stephan loves the most about the USA are the endless coffee-refills. that’s just his kinda cuppa!

the red skiff is a lovely down-to-earth place to eat! they have very kind service and reasonable prices. someone told me that their lunch is very yummy, too, and that they serve a good chowder and tasty burgers. so if you ever come around and you see people lining up, go and stand in the queue! it’s worth waiting a bit.

let’s go for some shopping after breakfast!  rockport of course has some of those typical knick-nack stores, that all the tourist places have. but there are also some really awesome stores to shop at, like LULA’s PANTRY and MILK & HONEY
for example. looking at all the beautiful maritime interior accessoires and the pretty crockery made me long for a home by the sea. a house with light grey shingles bleached by the ocean wind with pastel colored window frames. mint green would be perfect, don’t you think?

actually i fell in love with the pastel colored rugs. typically i’m smitten by that stuff that would cause horrible cost for extra baggage. so sad! they would have looked so freakin’ gorgeous here after our living room makeover! sigh.

travel | verliebt in rockport massachusetts

i mentioned it the other day in my B&B-POSTING about ROCKPORT. i really fell in love with this little new england coastal town. well, a few days before when we met the adorable MAINEMOMMA family for dinner in PORTLAND, jason asked us, if there was anythig about our roadtrip that surprised us so far!? at that point i had to say no, not yet! but when we stopped in rockport at CAPE ANN, i really was surprised. suprised about myself [me – noted for being a fan of big cities] that i immediately was so smitten by this  place! a small fisher town! i didn’t even realized why, but my pictures probably give the answer [beware, this is a photo loaded post]…

luzia pimpinella | travel | motif no. 1 rockport massachusetts

i think it’s because somehow rockport managed to keet up it’s lovely, small town spirit. although tourism as a source of revenue got ahead of lobster fishing. the brick red fishing shack in the background of the photo is  motif no. 1, the most painted building in the usa. so there must be really something about the spirit! so many painters cant’t go wrong. well, i didn’t feel the urge to paint but i felt like going on a photo tour. my family had other plans than that…

rockport is an awesome place to do some KAYAKING,
and as i didn’t have the plan to get a wet bottom and muscle aching arms, we seperated. they went paddling the calm sea and i went for a photo walk down BEARSKIN NECK.

it was early afternoon and the area was still pretty calm. actually it can get crowded in the later hours. though you shouldn’t expect to be around too late. when we got into town the first evening at about 9 p.m. we hardly found any restaurant that was willing to serve us dinner. at one diner they were pitiful, maybe it was luzie’s pathetic look, so we didn’t have to go to bed hungry. but i recommend to go for dinner earlier.

the two hours my family spent kayaking went by so very fast. at that point i was already head over heels with rockport. i almost purchased a little oil painting in a golden frame! i also popped in at FUDGERY and snuffed all that sweetness which made me bring my family later and buy tons of calories.

there are places that i see and my soul feels calm and is over with it. and there are places that i see and my soul feels like coming back and having more of it. maybe for a few more days next time. in a house by the see with buoys on the shingle wall. sigh…

travel | B&B liebe in rockport massachusetts

altough we travel a lot, i rarely write about our hotels. actually we see a lot of accomodations on our vacations. especially when we are on a roadtrip like this summer in NEW ENGLAND, because that means we change our places to stay quite often. well, as a matter of fact we don’t take the hotel-question too serious. after all we are on tour all day and just come in to get some sleep. we don’t need much luxury, but only a proper and clean place to sleep. so most of the accomodations we stay at are not really worth mentioning here on the blog. BUT…

… once in a while i insist on booking something really nice. because i think at least one hotel on a long trip should be something special. places like that are worth mentioning… like the cute B&B we stayed at in ROCKPORT, massachussetts, it was the QUARTERDECK INN BY THE SEA!

the feeling i had when booking this place was just right. the location at the bay overlooking the pretty fishing town rockport, the breathtaking view over the ocean, the kinda plush and cozy interior… everything was perfectly fitting my image of new england style. we had the upper floor all for our own. the room has a row of windows overlooking the sea. the little fräulein was all over the moon, ran around excitedly taking smartphone pictures and occupied the bed with the lovely birdy cover. as always we didn’t spent that much time here. but even mr. p. had to admit that he never had such gorgeous view from the bed.

next early morning we could watch lobster fishing while brushing our teeth. the fisherman were lobstering  right in front of our windows… and maybe they cought the lobsters we had on our plate at the restaurant that evening.

but our adorable B&B wasn’t the only reason why i fell in love with the little town of rockport at CAPE ANN so unexpectedly. i’ll show you more pics from here next week and you’ll probably understand.

when we were on our ROADTRIP through NEW ENGLAND this summer we slammed on the brakes quite often. what followed was a big very big bemoaning of the fact that we only travel with normal luggage instead of oversea containers and that we do have that sillly weight limit on flights. because in MAINE there were so many lovesome antique and vintage sales right along the way, in front yards or even sometimes in the boonies. so many amazing FINDS…

without any silly limitation we would probably have piles of colorful lobster buoys. even if we still needed a matching little house at the seaside. and we would have a huge route 66 sign. even if we still had to move back into a roomy old dwelling with large wall areas to hang it.

at least i purchased that little seafoam green ELEPHANT. but my heart is still bleeding when i think back to that super kitschy, but so adorable turkey platter [for only 5 bucks!] that i had to leave behind. i would even have launched celebrating thanksgiving in germany for it. alas!

our perfect day in PORTLAND that began that way, went on this way… of course a day in PORTLAND isn’t complete without a walk at the waterfront.

the OLD PORT area offers a lot of shops and restaurants, but we rather watched some real harbor life. while we took our walk the weather was getting better. so we decided spontaneously to go for a ferry boat tour.

when we came back from our ferry boat trip, we were glad that the place for our dinner date wasn’t far away but just around the corner at the FLATBREAD CO. we were just in time and quite excited.
well, to tell the story properly i have to start at an earlier point. once again i have to point out that i really believe that the internet can do magic. it lets the whole wide world come closer together and lets us get to know people we would have never met in analog life. i met lovely kristin aka MAINE MOMMA many years ago on FLICKR when i was still active there. her amazing photography inspired and touched me. i always believed that one day we would meet in real life and on that was that very special day. it was a memorable evening full of warmth, interesting talk and happy laughter.

travel tuesday | unser perfekter tag in portland maine #1

when we were on our NEW ENGLAND ROADTRIP we spent two nights in PORTLAND MAINE. we only had one full day to explore the town, but that’s the way it is sometimes being on a round trip. so we tried to see as much as possible. actually our day was so brimful that i wasn’t able to squeeze it in only one blog posting. that’s the reason why there will be a part #1 of our perfect day in portland today and a part #2 tomorrow.

if you ask me, the best thing to try to avoid rain showers is go shopping. portland has so many gorgeous vintage stores, so we stopped by at MATERIAL OBJECTS. the shop was brilliantly sorted and had some most gorgeous stuff on stock. we almost wondered about the reasonable prices at such a cool place.we left with a pencil case, an organza blouse, an awesome crochet lace sweater and a neon-yellow crochet tee for only 21$ all together.

dear folks, let’s just skip some of our destinations on our summer ROADTRIP and jump from TORONTO straight to MAINE. because this is the place where my big lobster love began and i want to tell you the story.

fast wären wir auf unserer ziemlich langen fahrt von QUEBEC CITY in kanada nach BAR HARBOR an der neuenglischen küste der USA einfach an diesem schild vorbei gefahren. das wäre dann allerdings ein ganz großes pech gewesen, denn hier sollte sich eine meiner persönlich liebsten urlaubs-erinnerungen dieses sommers manifestieren… was mal wieder zeigt, dass über die schönsten momente des reisens oft die kleinen zufälle entscheiden.after a long trip from QUEBEC CITY in canada down to BAR HARBOR at the new england coast, we almost drove by this sign without noticing. that would have been a real bummer, because now the evening we spent there is one of my favorite vacation moments to remember… and that once again shows that sometimes the most loved travel memories happen by chance.

OK, so we almost rushed by here. we were tired from the long trip and we only had 15 miles to go to our BAR HARBOR hotel. but when i shouted out: “holymoly, look at this huuuuge smoker!”, it was clear that we had to have dinner at this place. mr. P. made a u-turn on the road and we ended up in lobster heaven.

the sun was shining, we were in a good mood and sat down outside on a bench. connor squat down at our table and introduced himself as being our server for that evening. then he explained all the combos on the menue to us. we went for pulled pork and a lobster as a combo for the mister and i. the little fräulein chose texas chili.

while we were waiting for our dinner, connor showed us the giant smoker that they had originally “imported” from texas. mr. P. was deeply impressed. maybe you know that he wants a smoker for himself and has already been researching the web for months. it surely won’t be a huge thingy like this. our backyard would be all filled up with it. but soon he’ll own a smaller one. i’m curious how this will all work out, because this will definitely be the mister’s place to cook at. ;) but i wander from the subject. right in that big smoker the were packages of meat roasting to be fine pulled pork many, many hours later. at that point we really couldn’t wait to get our dinner.

und dann war er irgendwann dran… MEIN lobster! wäre ich zu dem zeitpunkt schon hummerprofi gewesen [das sollte ich irgendwann am ende des urlaubs nach 2 wochen fast konstanter hummerdiät sein], dann hätte ich damals schon corn on the cob, also einen maiskolben mitbestellt. der wird nämlich normalerweise gleich zusammen mit dem lobster im netz gekocht und ist hummer hammerköstlich. aber man muss ja die details des hummeressens auch noch dazulernen können.and then it was time… for MY lobster! if i was a lobster pro by that time [i would certainly develop to be one after two weeks of a nearly constant lobster diet], i would have ordered corn on the cob with it. the corn usually is boiled together with the lobster and it’s damn yummy. but well, i had my time to practise the details of lobster-eating later.

ich hatte irgendwann schon einmal hummer. also irgendwann in einem anderen leben. ich weiß gar nicht mehr wann und wo, aber ich erinnere mich, er war mickrig klein und sauteuer und irgendwie nicht wirklich bedeutungsvoll. aber DIESER hier, mein erster maine lobster, war eine offenbarung!!! ein bisschen peinlich fand ich ja die plastik “bibs”, also die dazu gereichten lätzchen, schon, aber ich nahm trotzdem erst mal eins. ich wusste ja nicht, wie ich mit so einem kaventsmann klar komme. ich bin sehr froh, dass herr p. so fotografierfaul ist und ich nicht mit plastiklätzchen um den hals und einem dämlich seligen grienen im gesicht im bild festgehalten würde. die nächsten male sollte ich so einen latz dann auch nicht mehr brauchen. frau hat doch ganz schnell den kniff raus, wie es ohne spritzen und kleckern funktioniert und das sollte ja schließlich nicht mein letzter hummer gewesen sein.i have had a lobster many years ago. i don’t even remember when or where. but i remember that it was tiny and freakin’ expensive and somehow not memorable. but THIS guy, my first maine lobster, was devine!!! the plastic bibs that came along with it were quite embarrassing though, but i took one anyway. after all i didn’t know yet how to handle a huge whooper like this. i’m really glad that mr. P. is so lazy when it comes to taking snapshots. so there is no photo proof of me with that bib and a silly sappy smile on my face. the next time i shouldn’t need any ogf these, because i quickly fournd out how to crack and eat them without making a total mess.

i didn’t snap the blissful face of mr. P. either, while he was floating in pulled pork heaven. neither the grumpy glance of the little fräulein… not because she wasn’t happy with her texas chili, but because she disaproved the crustacean massacre on my plate. well, each woman to her own.
no need to tell that we came back for a second time on our last day in bar harbor. the food was too good to stay away.

und wenn ihr dann zufällig vorbeikommt, dann esst einen frau-pimpi-gedächtnis-hummer für mich hier:please note the reasonable bill for this delicious family dinner by the way. here in germany it would probably bring tears to your eyes to have a dinner like that, but in maine at some lobster shacks you can get a twin lobster [that means two lobsters on your plate] for 20 dollar. yes, i hear all you lobster lovers cry out loud. there’s only one thing to do… travel maine!

and if you do so and you accidentally stop by at this place, then please have a mrs. pimpi-memorial-lobster for me:

luzia pimpinella BLOG | travel tuesday | instagram-collage: zurück von unserer canada & neuengland roatrip | instagram-collage: back from our canada & new england roadtrip

hi lovelies! we are back… 3 weeks of lobster diet, 1000s of miles and the luggage full of sweet travel memories. i still have to sort them all… as i have to do with the piles of vacation laundry. please be a litte patient with me. my body clock still wants to tick according to east coastal time. i promise, there will be more big pictures from our roadtrip to canada’s eastern cities and new england’s coast here to see soon.
i was secretly spying from afar what was ging on here. i saw that you dear readers enjoyed my dear  guestblogger’s (y’all are awsome! thank you so much again!) a lot. it was just the way it should be. i really needed my time without any laptop and charged up. but now it’s also nice to be here and online again! yay. mrs. pimpi is back!
BOOKS TRAVEL

book tip for your wanderlust: 36 hours | that is the period of time you mostly have for a place when you’re traveling on a roadtrip. or if you went on a weekend trip as well. so it’s invaluable to know how to use your short time optimally as 36 hours surely will pass quite fast!

deswegen [und natürlich aus gegebenem, vorfreudigen anlass der urlaubsplanung] liebe ich mein neues buch so… the new york times – 36 HOURS: 150 weekends in the USA & canada
that’s why i love my new book so much [especially considering the actual travel planning in progress]… the new york times – 36 HOURS: 150 weekends in the USA & canada

no idea how to spend your time the best way in portland maine from friday to sunday? no problem! it’s really amazing, i found almost every place that we’re going to visit in summer in the category “THE NORTH EAST”. [oh no, we’re not going to go with a travel trailer, but actuulyy i love the idea of having a little trailer for my shoes : ;) ]

DANKE euch!

well, yes… that means we finally made it. we figured out our route for our CANADA & NEW ENGLAND roadtrip in summer. we did with so much help and tips provided by YOU! we thank you so much for all your comments. they helped a lot and i noted lot’s of them down into my travel journal. just in case you’re are curious about our final route… the arrows in the photo show the places we’re going to go. exept one: CAPE ANN which also was a recomendation from you that we took very serious! THANK YOU, guys!

P.S. by the way… this awesome book is also available for 125 weekends in EUROPE. i’m definitely going to get that one, too. well, and somehow i realized that the last tuesday’s postings have been all about travelling. i still have many things to show, tips to share and stories to tell, so why not making a column out of it? as of now there will be a TRAVEL TUESDAY here on my blog. i hope you’ll enjoy it and it will maybe help you making own holiday plans!

TRAVEL

it’s that time of the year again… and as always it turned out to be completely different from what we thought before… and as always we’re late! i’m talking about the planning of our summer holidays. it was top #1 topic of conversation in our family over the last few weeks. the hardest thing was to find a destination. not because we weren’t able to agree about some place, but just because there are so many exiting places to see in this world. finally we got it. we finally found our destination for 2013…

we’re going on a roadtrip through EASTERN CANADA and NEW ENGLAND! [the roadtrip won against a trip to the seychelles in our final family voting, by the way. don’t ask how weird the ways of our decision-making went. it was just so typical for us to decide for something completely different than we thought before.]
i love roadtrips [exept the luggage-out luggage-in part, to be honest]. you see many exciting places and experience some adventures along your way. awesome! now it’s time for some detailed planning. it’s always a difficult part too, because there’s limited time but so much to see. well, the flights are booked… we’re starting in TORONTO havin three weeks to go and end up in BOSTON. some more destinations along the way are already fixed… like MONTREAL, PORTLAND maine and  CAPE COD. in between we still have some possibilities for planning our route. will we drive on northeast to visit QUEBEC city? or will we drive though vermont to have some ice-cream in BURLINGTON? is the ACADIA STATE PARK a must-see? oder will we rather drive through the WHITE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL FOREST

like i told you… so many places so little time! you kow i love to give travel tipps, because i love traveling, but i also love to get tipps from others. so it’s your turn, my lovelies! will you let me now your secrets about this region? where do we have to go? what do we have to see? where are the most fabulous shops? where do we get the very best lobster [or other yummy food]? where do we have the most breathtaking view? to make it short… tell us everything we shouldn’t miss! i’m sure we’ll have to think about extending our trip for at least three more weeks after getting your feedback … but anyway! we’re so looking forward to your personal experiences. thank you in advance for sharing them!
