monterey, part #2

einige von euch wissen ja bereits, was man am ende der cannery row findet… das wunderbare MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM. nachdem wir am vormittag wale bestaunen durften, konnten wir nun am nachmittag das vielfältige unterwasserleben der bucht beobachten.

some of you already know what you can find at the end of the cannery row… the amazing MONTEREY BAY AQUARIUM. after we had watched whales in the morning, we spent our afternoon marveling at the sea life of the bay.

die hauptattraktion des aquariums ist das riesige kelp-becken, in dem man das biotop eines KELP-WALDES, wie es sie in der bucht gibt, ganz nah erleben kann.

the main attraction of the aquarium is the giant kelp tank, where you can experience the habitat of an underwater KELP FOREST real close.

dieses foto mag ich, obwohl es total verschwommen ist…. ich hätte stunden vor dem becken mit den quallen stehen und sie beobachten können. was für eine seltsam sphärische atmosphäre…

i like this shot although it’s all blurry. i could have stood there and watched the jellyfish for hours… whar a weird spheric atmosphere…

für diesen beeindruckenden octopus hätte ich damals auch schon gern eine lichtstarke festbrennweite gehabt. dann wäre das foto unter den lichtbedingungen vermutlich nicht so verschwommen gewesen, denn dieser kerl war permanent in bewegung… und er war wunderschön, wie ich finde!

if i only had my fast prime lens back then. then probably i would have caught a better and less blurry picture of this impressing octopus. that guy was moving permanently… and he was such a beauty!

besonders für kinder gibt es ganz viele entdeckungsmöglichkeiten. luzie war komplett begeistert!

they offer lot’s of possibilities for children to experience sealife. luzie was all thrilled!

guckt euch die putzigen kerle an! das linke foto ist mein allerliebstes von diesem tag… ein tauchender TUFTED PUFFIN (= gelbschopflund). nun, wer so einen drolligen namen hat, kann ja nur selbst drollig sein.

look at these cute guys! the picture on the left is my very favorite of that day… a diving TUFTED PUFFIN. well, probably you just got to be adorable droll having such a funny name!?

übrigens… wenn ihr ein STAR TREK fan seid, so wie ich. dann habt ihr das monterey bay aquarium auf jeden fall schon einmal gesehen. nämlich in teil IV ZURÜCK IN DIE GEGENWART als heim von george & gracy, den buckelwalen… bevor sie ins 23. jahrhundert gebeamt werden, um die menschheit zu retten… ähm, ja… aber das ist eine andere story… ;)

by the way, if you are a STAR TREK fan like me, you’ve probably seen the monterey bay aquarium before. it was the home of the humpback whales “george and gracy” in part IV THE VOYAGE HOME before they got beamed into the 23rd century to save the human race… umm, yes… but that’s another story… ;)

zum abschluss des tages gabs natürlich seafood. wir aßen bei CRABBY JIM’s direkt an der waterfront mit blick auf die bucht, auf planschende seelöwen und fliegende pelikane. natürlich ist OLD FISHERMAN’S WHARF und sein pier touristisch geprägt. macht ja aber nichts, schließlich sind wir touristen! trotzdem… umso angenehmer waren wir überrascht über die qualität und das preisleistungsverhältnis dieses restaurants. wir fanden es absolut empfehlenswert!

der nächste stop unserer reise war dann der YOSEMITE NATIONALPARK… ich habe fast ein jahr danach immer noch nicht alle fotos sortiert und gesichtet… aber da kümmere ich mich jetzt mal drum, damit die reise in bildern weitergehen kann. habt einen schönen tag!

of course we had seafood for dinner that day. we dined at CRABBY JIM’S at the waterfront having a superb view on the bay, on playing sea lions and flying pelicans. looking at OLD FISHERMAN’S WHARF it’s quite touristy of course. no problem… after all we are tourists. but so we were pleasantly surprised about the fine quality of the food and the good value for money of the dishes. we can really recommend this restaurant.

the next stop of our trip was the YOSEMITE NATIONALPARK… i still haven’t screened and sorted all the photos i took at this amazing place. i’m going to do that now… so that the journey in pictures can go on. have a great day y’all!

monterey, part #1

wie eigentlich jedes jahr im juni (wenn das wetter so richtig schön schietig ist… so schietig, dass man, wie jedes jahr, wieder die heizung anschmeißen muss), kann ich es kaum erwarten, dass der sommerurlaub kommt und hibbele den ferien entgegen. während ich so vor mich hin hibbele, ist mir mal wieder bewusst geworden, dass ich ja noch nicht einmal unseren letzten sommer-trip zu ende gebloggt habe. eigentlich bin ich fotografisch auf unserem CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP erst über SAN FRANCISCO, ein stückchen die PAZIFIK-KÜSTE entlang, nach SANTA CRUZ gekommen. okay, ein paar bilder aus PALM SPRINGS und LOS ANGELES habe ich dazwischen geschoben. das war nicht ganz chronologisch… denn eigentlich wäre auf der route erst einmal MONTEREY und noch ein haufen anderer orte dran gewesen.

von dort zeige ich euch heute ein paar bilder. das bloggen von alten urlaubsfotos hält mich bei laune, bis endlich die ferien kommen… ;)

i feel like every year in june. bemoaning the far too cold weather (we always have to turn on the heating again in june. that’s not summer!) and so longing for the summer holidays. while i’m craving for summer i realized that i still didn’t blog all my stuff about last summer’s vacation. i still didn’t came further than SAN FRANCISCO, a bit along the PACIFIC-COAST reaching SANTA CRUZ on our CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP. okay, i brought forward some PALM SPRINGS shots and LOS ANGELES
pics. that wasn’ t chronological, but never mind. actually i skipped MONTEREY and a lot of other places.

so i show you some monterey photos today. that will cheer me up until this year’s summer holidays are coming.

bei unserer ankunft war das wetter durchwachsen. morgens war es ganz schön kühl und da wir einen WHALE WATCHING boattrip gebucht hatten, war erst einmal mützetragen und muckelige fleecejacke angesagt.

when we arrived the weather was so-so. the morning was quite chilly so we put on knitted caps and warm hoodies. because we had booked a WHAL WATCHING boattrip.

auch die seelöwen waren um diese zeit noch ganz schläfrig, bis auf die paar die schon ordentlich herum gebölkt haben… was für ein leben!

the sea lions were sleepy too that early morning. only some of them were barking… what a comfy life!

dann gings los und kaum waren wir unterwegs kam auch die sonne heraus! wir hofften natürlich ein paar wale zu sehen…

then we started off. the sun came out and we hoped to see some whales…

… und wir wurden nicht enttäuscht. zwei buckelwale durften wir für eine ganze weile beobachten, einen grauwahl ganz kurz (leider zu kurz und zu weit entfernt für ein foto). ein wunderbares erlebnis!

… and hadn’t been dissapointed. we saw two humpback whales and one gray whale. unfortunately the gray whale was to fast and to far away for shooting a picture. it was such a fascinating experience!

zurück im hafen waren ein paar der seelöwen schon ein bisschen munterer und spielten in der bucht…

when we came backe some of the sea lions were playing in the bay.

… und was man hier im KELP sieht, sind putzige otter! meist auf dem rücken paddelnd und kelp-blätter knabbern. leider reichte hier mein tele nicht aus…

… and what you may notice here in the KELP are cute otters! mostly swimming on their back nibbling kelp leaves. too bad that my tele lens wasn’t strong enough for a good shot…

… aber hier habe ich mal einen von nahem erwischt.

der kelp und kalte, nährstoffhaltige strömungen sind das, was die MONTEREY BAY so ökologisch wertvoll und zu einem tummelplatz für meeressäuger machen.

the kelp and cold, nutricious currents make MONTEREY BAY so special and ecological valuable. it’s the reason why so many marine mamals come here.

hier hatten wir übrigens unsere tour im voraus online gebucht… bei RANDY’S FISHING TRIPS. entdeckt hatten wir randy über TRIPADVISOR. dort recherchieren wir sehr gern, wenn wir unsere urlaubstipps planen.

nach unserer rückkehr hatten wir alle hunger… es gab CLAM CHOWDER in a BUN.

this is were we booked our whale watching trip online in advance… at RANDY’S FISHING TRIPS. we found randy via TRIPADVISOR, a platform we use a lot when doing our research for planning vacations.

coming back from our boattrip we were hungry… we had some CLAM CHOWDER in a BUN.

faul sein geht bei seelöwen offensichtlich den ganzen tag!

being lazy obviously works whole day long when you are a sea lion!

danach machten wir einen spaziergang die CANNERY ROW entlang. ich fand es etwas arg touristisch, wenn ihr mich fragt, aber am ende der straße gibt es noch ein echtes higlight. davon werde ich morgen berichten…

then we took a walk dowm CANNERY ROW. that famous street was a bit too touristy for my taste… but at the end there’s something worth visiting. i’ll tell you about that tomorrow…

… und um diese köstlichkeiten hier kamen wir einfach nicht drum herum.

ich wünsche euch einen schönen wochenstart. hoffentlich mit sonnenschein. hier haben sie im radio gerade eine unwetterwarnung durchgegeben… *augenroll*

… besides that we couldn’t help having some of these total lusciuos candied apples.

i wish you a good start into the week, hopefully with some sunshine. here they told something about a storm warning on the radio a few minutes ago… *sigh*

what we do for love…

… menschen tun seltsame dinge aus liebe. nun, im oktober im brautkleid im brunnen planschen, das wäre nicht meins gewesen. nicht einmal in der BETHESDA FOUNTAIN im new yorker CENTRAL PARK. bei aller LIEBE… und bei der kälte? nein. aber eine menge menschen, so wie wir auch, fanden, dass es durchaus interssant anzusehen war. ich hoffe, sie hatte ein zweites brautkleid dabei…

… people do strange things for love. like splashing about in the BETHESDA FOUNTAIN in new york city’s CENTRAL PARK dressed i a bridal gown in october. all for LOVE… but nope, i guess i wouldn’t do it. but it was surely fascinating to watch for the surrounding crowd. i hope she had a second wedding dress…

ich wette, viele von euch kennen den laden bereits aus dem kino und erinnern sich an das gigantisch große piano, auf dem tom hanks 1988 in BIG herum hopste. dies ist sicherlich eine der großen attraktionen des hauses…

…aber viel cooler ist der MUPPET WHATNOT WORKSHOP im erdgeschoss.

i had to ask for permission…

… denn schon der titel dieses reiseführers sagt “für eltern verboten!” nun ja, aber nachdem wir alle drei ganz große new york fans sind, durften wir eltern auch gnädigerweise mal hineinluschern und wir halten fest, dieser reiseführer macht nicht nur den kleinen spaß! uns auch! den müssen wir euch also zeigen.

um es vorwegzuschicken… es ist ein new york KINDERreiseführer, der soll spannend und unterhaltsam sein und nebenbei ein paar wissenswerte fakten über die city liefern. das tut er absolut und zwar bunt lustig und pfiffig! wer, wie teilweise die ersten rezensoren bei amazon, den inhalt eines reiseführers für erwachsene mitsamt seines intellektuellen anspruchs und einhergehender langeweile im miniformat wünscht, der wird enttäuscht sein. dieses buch schlichtweg nicht für elternansprüche gedacht, sondern eben für die kids. ;) nichts für ungut.

… to show you this book, because the title of this travel guide says “not for parents!”. you know we three are big new york city fans, so our little one graciously allowed us to peek inside. so let’s record first that not only kids but also adults may enjoy this travel guide a lot!

i’d also like to note that this new york KIDS travel guide is supposed to be exciting, colorful and entertaining. it offers funny facts as well as a heap of the worth knowing. but it might not be appreciated by parents who expect a mini-version of an adult guide (with all it’s intellectual claim and involved deadly dullness). i got the feeling that some of them wrote the first reviews on amazon… no offence meant! ;) it is for kids only!

kinder erfahren hier, was kinder wirklich interessiert… warum nennt man NYC auch BIG APPLE? … und was hat es mit dem spitznamen gotham city auf sich? wusstet ihr, dass eine der ersten schlachten um die unabhängigkeit amerikas in brooklyn stattfand? ich nicht… also sogar eltern können hier noch etwas lernen.

the kids get to know things that are really interesting for kids… like the reason why NY ist called the BIG APPLE!? … or why do some people call it GOTHAM CIY? do you now that one of the first battles of america’s independence was fought in brooklyn? i didn’t… so even adults will learn from this book.

wir erfahren, dass die oaseim herzen new yorks, der CENTRAL PARK, früher ein sumpf war.

we get to know that the oasis in the heart of new york, the CENTRAL PARK, was a swamp in former times.

die abteilung architektur beschreibt die tolle schneckenspirale des GUGGENHEIM MUSEUMS und den bau der wunderschönen BROOKLYN BRIDGE. wir lernen, dass wir das MOMA ein paar mutigen damen zu verdanken haben, dass die FREIHEITSSTATUE eigentlich ein französisches fräulein ist und was der bulle in der WALL STREET zu suchen hat.

the architecture section tells us about the awsome snail loop of the GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM and how they built the beautiful BROOKLYN BRIDGE. we also learn that the MOMA was opened by some fearless women, that the STATUE OF LIBERTY is a french mademoiselle and why there is a bull running around WALL STREET.

und wusstet ihr, dass die straße, die wir alle als kind so sehr liebten, die SESAMSTRASSE, der new yorker amsterdam avenue nachempfunden ist. erinnert ihr euch noch an herrn huber und oskar in der mülltonne? zu den puppen von JIM HENSON möchte ich euch morgen noch etwas erzählen… ;)

and did you know that the street that we all loved so much in our childhood, the SESAME STREET, is inspired by the AMSTERDAM AVENUE in new york city? do you remember all these adorable creatures by JIM HENSON? i’m going to show you some more tomorrow… ;)

außerdem gibt es spannendes zu lesen über ratten in der u-bahn, alligatoren in der kanalisation und aliens in manhattan.

there are also some exciting stories about rats down the subway, alligators in the canalization and aliens landing in manhattan.

bei der seite über die cops musste ich schmunzeln, denn für luzie ist es bis heute eines der aufregendsten erlebnisse gewesen, beobachten zu können, wie new yorker polizisten mit quietschenden reifen direkt neben uns hielten, um dann rennend eine gruppe skater zu verfolgen. einer davon wurde verhaftet…. bäuchlings auf die motorhaube gedrückt, mit handschellen auf dem rücken… wie im film! ein weiteres kapitel ist den helden new yorks, den feuerwehrmännern gewidmet. die kerle machen auch echt eindruck und winken selbst dann noch einem kleinen mädchen an der ampel zu, wenn sie mit brüllenden sirenen zu einem löscheinsatz rasen.

the page about the cops made me grin. it reminded me of one of luzie’s most exciting and favorite vacation stories… a police car stopped right beside us with squealing tires. two cops jumped out and ran after some skaters. one of the skater was arrested with handcuffs and everything…. just like in a movie. another double page of this book is dedicated to the heroes of the city… the fireman. i can tell that these guys are quite impressing and they are never to busy to smile and wave at a little girl waiting at a traffic ight… even if the sirenes are howling on their way to fight a fire.

ha! und den haben wir natürlich auch schon life gesehen… den NAKED COWBOY am TIMES SQUARE…

new york city ist ein schmelztiegel der kulturen und auch der religionen… irgendwie füht es sich deshalb auch ganz logisch an, dass es der sitz der VEREINTEN NATIONEN ist… auch das ist thema und noch vieles mehr.

new york city is a melting pot of cultures and religions… so somehow it feels just natural that it’s the home of the UNITED NATIONS as well… we learn about that and much more.

also, auch wenn er eigentlich für mich als erwachsenen verboten ist… ich liebe diesen kleinen reiseführer! und die kleine lego-freiheitsstatue ist übrigens meine! ätsch mann, bätsch mann!

P.S. die total cool verrückten reiseführer von national geographic und lonely planet gibt es übrigens auch für PARIS, LONDON und ROM. den für rom haben wir uns auch schon mal besorgt, denn der sommer kommt ja hoffentlich bald! ;)

so even if it’s forbidden for me as a parent… i really love this little travel guide! and by the way… the mini lego statue of liberty is mine… mine… mine!

i LOVE lomography

dass stephan unterwegs ab und an eine vollbremsung machen muss, weil ich im vorbeifahren irgendwas gesehen habe, was ich jetzt dringend näher begucken und vor allem fotografieren muss, daran hat sich die ganze familie schon gewöhnt. der lieblingsmann bremst mittlerweile auch schon mal ohne ansage meinerseits. wenn ich dann überrascht gucke, dann heißt es zum beispiel… “ich habe da hinten einen pinken mustang gesehen, ich dachte, den würdest du gern fotografieren!?” ich LIEBE meine lieben für sowas. sie bringen meinem foto-knall soviel verständnis und vor allem eine unglaubliche geduld entgegen.

my family is quite used to the fact that stephan sometimes has to slam on the brakes just because i saw something i must look at or shoot urgently. meanwhile the hubby sometimes stops because he saw something i might love to photograph, like… “i spotted some pink mustang there and i thought you might love to shoot it!?” i really LOVE my lovelies for that. they do have so much understanding and an amazing amount of patience for me to be round the bend when it comes to photographing.

eine vollbremsung des letzen sommers war in west hollywood, los angeles vor dem lomography gallery store.
die entdeckung war zufällig, dabei bin ich schon lange ein fan der LOMOGRAPHY, ihrer ganz speziellen fotografie und der bunten
plastikkameras. ende der 90er kaufte ich meine erste lomo, eine ACTIONsampler.

one full braking of last summer was in west hollywood. los angeles in front of the lomography gallery store. without having a clue it was there we passed accidentially, although i’ve been a fan of LOMOGRAPHY for a long time. i purchased my first ACTIONsampler in the late 90s

in dem store hätte ich stunden bleiben und schauen können… allein die riesige fotowand!!!

i could have spend hours inside the store… just look at this huge photo wall!!!

die kameras schrien natürlich auch alle NIMM MICH MIT, aber ich habe mich (zum absoluten erstaunen des lieblingsmanns) zusammengerissen. eine sache musste doch mit, aber die zeige ich euch nachher noch.

witzigerweise hatte luzie just an diesem tag ihr shirt mit der gestickten PIMPIRAZZIkamera an. das sorgte bei der shop-belegschaft für begeisterung… sie liebäugelte inzwischen mit einer DIANA, allerdings vor allem wegen der farbe. ;)

P.S. falls ihr in BERLIN oder in KÖLN wohnt, dann habt ihr übrigens sogar einen eigenen lomo store!

surely all that cameras were calling out TAKE ME HOME, but i resisted unwaveringly (to hubby’s surprise). i only bought one thing i’m going to show you later on today.

it was funny that luzie wore her tee with the embroidered PIMPIRAZZIcam that day. the staff of the shop was all enthusiastic about it… while she was fancying a DIANA most notably because of its color. ;)

P.S. by the way… if you live in BERLIN or in COLOGNE, you do have an own lomo store!

heute beginnt das jahr des wasserdrachen… der drachen ist ein ungestümes wesen, wir dürfen gespannt sein, was 2012 uns bringt.

mich hat der heutige chinesische feiertag erst einmal dazu gebracht, wieder einmal in den fotos des letzten sommers zu kramen… ich habe ein paar bilder von LOS ANGELES chinatown herausgesucht…

santa cruz ::: memories of summer

draußen regnet es bindfäden, es ist grau und uzzelig. mir steht der sinn nach ein paar sonnigen urlaubserinnerungen in BUNT. also geht es heute ein paar meilen weiter auf unserem CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP…

nachdem es in SAN FRANCISCO ja doch sehr kühl war konnten wir bei einem kleinen pitstop auf unserem weg nach MONTEREY in SANTA CRUZ ein wenig sonne tanken. das erste mal in dem urlaub barfuß… was wür ein wunderbarer tag… kommt doch ein stückchen mit…

it’s raining cats and dogs today. it’s grey and unpleasant outside and i feel i need some COLORFUL vacation memories. so let’s travel on a few miles on our CALIFORNIA ROADTRIP of summer…

after chilly SAN FRANCISCO we made a little stop in SANTA CRUZ on our way to MONTEREY. we enjoyed the sunshine and the warm temperatures so much being bare footet for the first time of this vacation… it was such a lovely day… come on and take a walk with us….

danke an dieser stelle auch noch mal an dich, NANCY…. ohne dich wären wir vermutlich an santa cruz vorbeigefahren. ;)

let me say thank you to you, NANCY… we would probably drove past santa cruz without you pointing out how lovely it is. ;)

… eines NYC taxifahrers.

der geneigte blogleser kennt ja meine liebe zu new york city und weiß auch um die tatsache, dass wir in den letzten jahren im oktober immer für ein paar tage dort waren. dieses jahr nicht… ich gebe zu, ich habe gerade ganz arg sehnsucht.

DAVID BRADFORD schafft mit seinen schwarz-weiß fotografien ein ganz persönliches portrait seiner stadt. er ist weniger ein taxifahrer, der fotos schießt, sondern vielmehr ein künstler, der taxi fährt. ich liebe den blick durch sein objektiv.

with his black and white photographs DAVID BRADFORD creates a very personal portrait of his city. he is no taxi driver shooting pictures but more a photographing artist driving a taxi. i love the view through his lense.

wusstet ihr übrigens, dass es nahezu unmöglich ist, zwischen 4 und 5 uhr nachmittags in NYC ein taxi zu bekommen? da ist schichtwechsel… das und noch mehr wissenswertes übers taxifahren im big apple findet ihr übrigens auch HIER.

did you know that it’s almost impossible to get a taxi between 4 and 5 p.m.? it’s change of shift time…

ach ja, die blumen in taxi-farbe… sind übrigens kamille. ich musste improvisieren und sie vom feldrand klauen, nachdem ja alle örtlichen floristen ignorieren, dass ich mir CRASPEDIA wünsche. auch hübsch, oder? auch wenn sie irgendwie schon ein bisschen nach grippe-saison duften…

botanische aufklärung! es ist RAINFARN! ich dachte wirklich, vor allem
wegen des starken kamille-dufts, dass es irgendeine art kamille ohne
blütenblätter sein müsste. man lernt doch nie aus! ]

oh well, the flowers in taxi color are camomile by the way. i had to improvise and steal them at the field since every florist in this town ingores my whish for CRASPEDIA. i think they are pretty as well. although the smell reminds me of the upcoming flu season…

ein bisschen gelbes fernweh habe ich auch vernäht…

i did also sew up some yellow wanderlust…

… in ein paar NYC taxi reisesachentäschchen… für reisedokumente und all den kleinkram, den man unterwegs auf reisen so benötigt. eins wird mich hoffentlich nächstes jahr wieder in meine lieblingsstadt begleiten… die anderen reisen ins SHÖPchen und warten dort auf einen anschlußflug nach irgendwo. ;)

[EDIT: offenbar gibt es so einige damen, deren herz für den big apple schlägt… die täschchen sind bereits VERGRIFFEN… tut m ir leid. nachschub von dem taxi-stöffchen zu besorgen wird wohl nicht ganz so leicht, ich hatte es schon 2-3- jährchen gut abgelagert, aber ich schaue mal, was ich machen kann…]

to some NYC taxi cab zipper pouch… made for travel documents and all that little stuff you need when travelling. i am going to keep one myself. hopefully it will travel with me to my favorite city next year again. the others now travel to my little SHOP to wait for a connecting flight to wherever. ;)

anna & luzie…

… und wunderbare erinnerungen an ein paar ganz besondere tage in diesem sommer. ich werde mich wohl immer daran erinnern, wie die zwei sich, auf der rückbank des wagens, während der zähen L.A. rush hour, die allerwichtigsten wörter der eigenen sprache beibrachten… wörter wie pups und popel und bauchnabelfussel und solch essentielle vokabeln! ach ja, und toe jam, für das es im deutschen nicht einmal eine übersetzung gibt! was für ein verrücktes gegiggel auf allen plätzen!

ein DANKEschön von herzen, liebe NANCY, für deine so lieben zeilen… and remember you do have FAMILY here, too. mensch, ich hab schon wieder eine wollsocke im hals. we miss you guys! XOXO!

… and lovely memories of some very special days we had this summer. i will always remember these two sitting on the back seat of the car, in the middle of the L.A. rush hour, teaching each other the most important words of their own language… words like fart and booger and button lint and such essential vocables! oh yes, and toe jam for what we don’t even have an equivalent in the german language! what a crazy giggling on all seats!

THANK YOU from my heart, dear NANCY, for your so loving words… and remember yourself, that you do have family here. man, this lump in my throat is coming back again…. we miss you guys! XOXO!

… eigentlich sollte die GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE ja grau werden, wie brücken nunmal sind. wie wunderbar, dass man sich dann doch entschlossen hat, hier mal mutig FARBE zu bekennen. auch wenn das bedeutet, dass man permanent pinseln muss und vorn wieder anfängt, wenn man hinten gerade fertig geworden ist.

… actually the GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE was supposed to be grey as most of the bridges in the world are. so wonderful that someone decided to show one’s COLORS. even if that means that they have to keep up painting and start over at one side when finished at the other end.

mit diesen fotos verlassen wir nun SAN FRANCISCO zu neuen zielen auf unserem california roadtrip. ich kann es nicht fassen, dass ich immer noch nicht weiter gekommen bin, mit meinem fotografischen reisebericht hier im blog, aber irgendwie kommt immer was dazwischen…

with these we leave SAN FRANCISCO to keep on rolling on our california roadtrip. i just can’t believe that i didn’t get very far yet blogging about our journey. but something’s always coming in my way …

du kommst durch die große mandarinorange tür, die dir ein hübscher junger mann mit ebenso mandarinorangen chinos aufhält, in das PARKER PALM SPRINGS und fühlst dich umgehend so groovy baby, wie austin powers sich nur fühlen könnte. du bekommst schnappatmung angesichts des umwerfenden interior designs von jonathan adler und du fragst dich, wie dein lieblingsmann sich in dem hellblauen frotteeanzug von james bond aus goldfinger wohl in diesem ambiente machen würde.

you come through the huge tangerine door, opened by a handsome guy in tangerine chinos, into the PARKER PALM SPINGS and you feel as groovy baby as austin powers could only feel. you are gasping for breath in the face of that adorable interior designed by jonathan adler and you ask yourself how your hubby, wearing the light blue terry cloth jumper of james bond in the goldfinger movie, would blend in this ambience.

wenn ihr mein BUCHposting von gestern gelesen habt, dann habt ihr eine leichte ahnung davon, wie aus dem häuschen ich war (der lieblingsmann hat die ganze zeit geschmunzelt) als wir hier herein kamen… und wie sehr ich es bedauerte, dass wir nicht hier ein zimmer gebucht hatten.

if you have read my yesterday’s BOOKposting, you might have an image of how i was just over the moon coming in here (hubby was grinning all the time)… and how i felt pity not having booked a room for our palm springs stay here.

überhaupt war PALM SPRINGS ein ort an dem ich gern so viel mehr zeit während unseres kalifornien roadtrips verbracht hätte, aber manchmal ist man eben hinterher schlauer. diese stadt, förmlich eine oase in der wüste und zwischen bergen, hat mich absolut fasziniert. ich liebe mid-century modern architektur und palm springs ist ihr mekka. hier machten die hollywood-legenden pause vom film-business, ließ sich frank sinatra einen pool in pianoform bauen. hier kann man den glanz dieser glamourösen zeiten noch überall erahnen.

PALM SPRINGS itself was so worth spending more time at, but sometimes it’s easy to be wise after the event. next time we do a cali roadtrip i’ll definitely plan more time. this city is literally an oasis in midst of desert and mountains. i was so fascinated by all that awesome mid-century modern architecture you can find everywhere, as palm springs was and is a mekka for modern architects. this is the place where the hollywood legends took their time out from the movie business, the place where frank sinatra had his pool built in the shape of a piano. you still feel the glamorous times everywhere around.

für mich ist jetzt schon klar, dass wir irgendwann wiederkommen. palm springs hat uns in seinen bann gezogen. wir alberten beim abendessen sogar, dass dieser ort einen hervorragenden ruhesitz im alter abgeben würde! außerdem möchte ich mit meiner teeny-tochter irgendwann gern auf das COACHELLA festival, das ja quasi um die ecke ist…. ein punkt auf meiner persönlichen “bucket list”… ich hoffe, sie nimmt mich dann noch mit. ;)

it’s clear to me that we do have to plan a longer stay at palm springs next time when we come back, because it fascinated us so much. we even fooled around about retire at this special place one day when we’re older! and… moreover i really want to see the COACHELLA festival together with my teen daughter one day… this is one point of my personal bucket list… hopefully she takes me with her. ;)

PALM SPRINGS hat eine reihe einzigartiger hotels zu bieten… z.b. findet ihr HIER eine liste. das ACE war eigentlich meine erste wahl, aber leider damals auch schon auchgebucht. wenn ihr architektur-begeistert seid, dann kann ich euch eine TOUR ans herz legen, für die ich selbst leider keine zeit hatte… infos findet ihr auch HIER. karten, auf denen die bemerkenswertesten häuser verzeichnet sind, bekommt ihr zudem in der touristen-information vor ort. der FOCUS hatte vor einer weile auch einen interessanten artikel zum thema. außerdem findet ihr hier eine ONLINEliste mit architektonischen schätzen.

ein USA urlaub ist einfach nicht komplett ohne ein essen in einem echt urigen diner. das THE GRUBSTAKE ist ein 1927 ausrangierter eisenbahnwagen, uriger gehts also kaum…

no USA vacation is complete without having a burger in an authentic diner. THE GRUBSTAKE is located in a rail car decommissioned in 1927. that is quite an authentic experience…

der geneigte blogleser weiß ja längst, dass radfahren eine leidenschaft des lieblingsmanns ist. in san francisco gibt es einen tollen ort für passionierte radfahrer, den RAPHA CYCLE CLUB… zum treffen unter gleichgesinnten, zum shoppen und zum fachsimpeln bei einer tasse kaffee.

the well-disposed blog reader already knows that one of the hubby’s passions is cycling. in san francisco there’s an awesome place for passionate bikers… the RAPHA CYCLE CLUB. you can meet like-minde dpeople, you can shop, you can talk shop over a cup of coffee.

sehr cool, fand der lieblingsmann. sowas hätten wir hier bitte auch gern.

some serious tree-hugging …

an einem san francisco vormittag haben wir uns auf den weg über die golden gate bridge gemacht, an sausalito vorbei und haben den nebel in der bay hinter uns gelassen… um die MUIR WOODS zu sehen.

one day of our san francisco stay we crossed the golden gate bridge, passed sausalito and left the bay’s fog behind us to see the MUIR WOODS.

unglaublich beeindruckend sind die REDWOOOD bäume {SEQUOIAS}, die zu den höchsten bäumen der welt gehören. hunderte von jahren haben sie auf ihrem borkigen buckel. sie haben überschwemmungen, erdbeben und feuer überlebt, auch wenn ihre rinden mit feuernarben übersät sind. aufgrund des hohen tannin-gehaltes sind sie widerstandsfähiger als andere bäume gegen waldbrände und schädlinge, der einzige feind ist der mensch.

the REDWOOD trees {SEQUOIAS}, which are some of the highest trees in the world, are just breathtaking. hundreds of years by age they survived floods, earthquakes and forest fires. some of them are laced with fire scars but they are still standing. their tannin makes them resistant against fires and varmints, their only enemy is the human being.

ein ganz schön winziger zapfen für einen so gigantischen baum! sie haben auch meist auf dem waldboden keine chance zum keimen… es fehlt licht und die konkurrenz im unterholz ist einfach stärker.

a quite tiny cone for such a giant tree! they rarely have a chance to sprout. missing light and the challenging trees of the undergrowth make it hard.

aber sie sind hart im nehmen, also haben sie natürlich eine ganz eigene strategie, sich zu vermehren… sie klonen sich quasi indem sie schößlinge austreiben. sieht man mehrere redwoods nebeneinander, sind sie höchstwahrscheinlich genetisch identische geschwisterbäume.

but they are survivors, so they have their own strategy to duplicate… they kind of clone themselves by sprouting of buds. if you see some redwood trees standing close to each other they are genetic identical sibling trees mostly.

huch! so nah…. ein unglaublicher moment!

CHIPMUNKIOSIS

chipmunk-i-osis (= streifenhörnchenitis, eine unter der menschlichen spezies weit verbreitete krankheit. hochgradig ansteckend ist der unkontrollierbare impuls, wilde tiere zu füttern)

chipmunkiosis tritt in erscheinung, wenn menschliche wesen wilde tiere irritieren, indem sie sie für zahm halten und ihnen futter anbieten. die wilden tiere werden abhängig davon und können folglich aggresiv reagieren, wenn sie nicht gefüttert werden. in schweren fällen von aggression kann dies zu verletzungen führen, sowohl vom mensch als auch von tier.

um dieser krankheit vorzubeugen, FÜTTERN SIE BITTE KEINE WILDLEBENDEN TIERE. für ihre eigene sicherheit beobachten sie sie bitte aus der distanz.
