well, i told you last week… it’s almost impossible for me to put all my favorite travel shots from MÉRIDA into just one posting. but i tried anyway. so the following turned out to be a bit longer…
the quite lovely thing about mérida is, that this city is a tourist town, but on the whole it doesn’t seem too touristic. it’s really no secret gem for yucatán travellers anymore but it gives you the feeling that it still is one. there are so many times you feel like the only stanger at this place… it was awesome.

like in every mexican city or village, the zócalo, the central square is the lively heart of town. in this case it’s the PLAZA GRANDE. the pretty park with trees and {also} shady benches is surrounded by beautiful historical architecture. for example the CATEDRAL DE SAN ILDEFONSO, which is a spiritual union of spanish and mayan history as people used stones from an ancient maya temple to construct it. the lovely green colonial building  in the last picture is the  PALACIO DE GOBIERNO.  you can walk inside to have a look at the amazing murals painted by local artist FERNANDO CASTRO PACHECO. you can also find the tourist office at the ground floor of this building by the way. there are free guided tours around the historical places available.

it’s nice and easy to explore mérida by foot. sometimes you have to be careful though because the sidewalks can be very narrow and the traffic’s passing by real close. i love to just walk around and watch real life going on.

horse drawn carriages can bee seen all aound the place {an explicit sign that we were not the only tourists in the city}. i love to make a tourist-fool out of myself once in a while. it’s so much fun and after all little donkey wanted that ride so baaadly…

i think i mentioned {quite several times} that i really love to visit local markets wherever we go. you can watch people, try local food, buy some vegetables and stuff to have a picnic… a market is always an inspiring place to be. in mérida it’s the MERCADO MUNICIPAL LUCAS DE GÁLVEZ  {the municipal market} where life happens. i found a nice artikle about the market HERE by the way, if you’re interested.

every saturday evening at 8 p.m. the streets around the plaza grande will be closed up for traffic. every weekend the people of mérida celebrate the street festival “el corazón de mérida” … colorful, happy, delicious and with music and public dance. we planned our stay at the city over a weekend to be able to attend this event and it’s lovely hustle and bustle… it was totally worth it.

in front of the PALACIO MUNICIPAL {the city hall} hundreds of couples swayed all over the place to the sound of a  MARIACHI band. it was such a lovely atmoshpere. mr. P. and i tried a little dance ourselves {unfortunately without any photo proof} but stopped, as we felt like left-footed dorks comparing to the lithe moves of the mexicans.

even on the smaller squares around the center life’s bursting on saturday nights. folklore dancing {tradional as well as modern} and singing  performances of local clubs are on stage. there are booth with tacos, enchiladas & such, stands selling marquesitas and churros {found a nice recipe HERE by the way} and ice cream… and the most lovely thing about it is, that these cultural events are organizied by locals and for locals. we hardly saw any tourist at this place on that evening we spent there… it was awesome.

i didn’t bring a traditional HUIPIL from this trip. i still think it’s a bummer i didn’t. but we brought lots of sweet travel memories and tons of photographs, as you can see… for me these are the most precious souvenirs anyway.

there are cities, where you you wish you had a few more days to stay than you planned for your travels. MÉRIDA in yucatán, mexico was a place like this for me. time went by too fast and we all wished we could have stayed a bit longer.

browsing through my photographs from mérida i realized that there are far too many impressions to squeeze them into just one posting. so i thought, i better don’t rush and take it slow when it comes to talk about my love for this city.

after all the mexicans don’t like to rush things either and they’re right. how many times do we feel like being hunted by el diablo, hurrying through our lives? … we should better stop for a siesta once in a while. for example here:

the café EL HOYO is a lovely place to take a break in mérida. the guests are mostly young people. they have very good latte and small, yummy snacks that aren’t small at all but bursting your plate. if you want to send a picture of your huge nutella waffles home you can do so as they do offer free wifi. there is a little pretty patio in the back to enjoy your meal or drink outside. i especially loved the adorable tiles…
have you been in mérida before? what was your favorite hang out place?

P.S. by the way… HERE you can find all my yucatán MEXICO travel photographs and reports published so far.

travel mexiko | we three and the big blue

the new year arrived. i wonder what it might bring. without a doubt 2010 has been a very happy year for us… i am really grateful for it. when we had our breakfast today i asked my lovelies to tell me their most amazing moment of the past year. we three instantly agreed that we all had our happiest moment underwater! i cannot discribe the feelings of that special day… but i had my camera with me…
… ich bekomme jetzt noch herzklopfen. …  still my heart beats faster when i see these pictures.
only 2 people plus guide were allowed in the water… so we had to split but i had the chance to take pictures of luzie and stephan while snorkeling.
mein lieblingsbild… stephan & der walhai. – my favorite photo… stephan & the whale shark
we three will always remember this day in the deep wide blue… meeting these gentle giants.

welcome to chichén itzá… one of the new seven wonders of the world.
der leguan braucht neue schuhe…    the iguana needs some new shoes…
the temple of kukulkán’s peeping over the wall with skull frieze which was really stunning.
the group of a thousand columns. actually there are only 400…
these stone rings are part of the great ball court , the juego de pelota, where the mayan played pok-ta-pok…  i guess you needed supernatural power to play that game, considering that the rings are 7 meters high on a straight wall and you had to kick a 4 kilogramm caoutchouc ball through the hole without using hands or feet!
jetzt aber ab ins grüne…    but now off into the greens…
… on our way to a cenote. the yucatan peninsula has over 7000 of these sweetwater sinkholes and flowstone caves. in some of them you can swim…
*lol*
ummm… that tummy isn’t the result of the delish mexican food of course… nooo, it’s only caused by my hollow back! for sure! *lol*
luzie loved the cenote canoeing in the kantun chi eco park… she turned out to be a natural paddler! who knew!?
these little fish-guys used to nibble at your toes! imagine us girls sqeaking all the time…
JUMP!!!
*lach*
i wasn’t allowed to take pictures inside the stalactite cave of kantun chi myself. so sad. but they did the job of photographing… well, at least we do have some real classic tourist shots in out portfilio now…. *lol*
hi there!!!
bald schon tequila     tequila to be…
of course eselchen was with us … everywhere! he climbed the top of the cobá pyramide, undaunted by death and the pouring rain, to pose in front of the yucatecan jungle!
*lach*)
this pigeon couple was too cute (although i usually don’t like pigeons that much)… they sat side by side while a rainstorm shook this plant (that reminded me of sideshow bob’s hairdo somehow… *lol*)
… und nun zu etwas ganz anderem… ABENTEUER! ;)
… and now to something completely different… ADVENTURE! ;)
roping down 15 meters into a dry cenote. i didn’t dare. but my brave hubby did.
zip-lining back across the vale. not my favorite activity as well. i am a sissy.
el castillo in tulum…  ein atemberaubender blick.
el castillo in tulum… what a stunning view.
bench monday… leguan inclusive! :)
bench monday… including iguana! :)
badepause…    swimming break…
mexico is not only colorful and vivid but full of amazing adventures!
p.s. this was probably the longest posting ever… thank you for hanging on! ;)

GOLDEN
thank you so much for your warm enthusiasm about the colorfol mexican photos! that makes me happy… especially since i struggle for words to describe my own exaltation about mexico. it’s so very nice that you’re able to see and feel it looking at my pictures… THANK YOU!
seems that the weekend won’t be that golden here in this country… nevertheless i wish you some sweet golden moments!

COLORS
where to start? where to start with fourtytwo gigabyte of photographs to be looked through and assorted… with thousands of impressions and memories on my mind? it’s always hard for me to find appropriate words to describe how amazing a journey can be, how impressing and enriching…
sitting here i once again realize that i am not a big writer. i am a photographer. so i let the pics tell the story…
… luzie also brought her most important things of course… “eselchen” & her  camera.
mexico… wir haben uns verliebt.
mexico… we fell in love.
